Promoters Sue Rap Star Teka$hi 6ix9ine Over Canceled Concert for Howard U.

Promoters of a concert during Howard University’s 2018 homecoming sued rap star Teka$hi 6ix9ine last week after they were forced to cancel the event at Echostage in Northeast Washington, D.C.

They said the rap star, whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, breached his contract by failing to appear for the concert.

The promoters claim $5.3 million in compensation for lost revenue and damage to their professional reputations. Their lawsuit is filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Hits Before Fame LLC and After Hours LLC said they paid Hernandez $58,500 of the $60,000 they promised him before the show. They paid Echostage $25,000 and spent $11,500 to promote the concert.

A half-hour before the scheduled Oct. 28 show, Hernandez had not shown up, forcing the promoters to cancel the show.

"When the event was canceled, the plaintiffs were forced to turn away 3,108 customers, including more than 2,100 who had previously bought tickets and nearly 1,000 who were already standing in line to purchase tickets outside Echostage," their lawsuit says.

In addition to refunding $195,000 in pre-concert tickets and VIP table sales, they received numerous negative comments and threats from fans, Hits Before Fame LLC and After Hours LLC said.

When the plaintiffs contacted Hernandez, he made what they called “defamatory” statements that accused them of failing to pay the contracted deposit and dealing with his so-called “agents” who were not really employed by the rap star.

“Defendant Hernandez’s defamatory statements have negatively impacted the Plaintiffs’ ability to engage opening acts for other events, to secure VIP table sales and to engage investors and promoters,” the lawsuit says.

The plaintiffs are represented by the Law Offices of Bradley Ashton Thomas.

The case is Hits Before Fame LLC et al. v. Daniel Hernandez et al., case number 1:20-cv-01845, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
