What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune condition that causes the rapid buildup of your skin cells. It causes symptoms such as scaly, dry, or itchy skin. Typically, skin cells grow deep in your skin and slowly rise to the surface. Eventually, they fall off.
The typical life cycle of a skin cell is 1 month. In people with psoriasis, this production process may occur in just a few days. Because of this, skin cells don’t have time to fall off. This rapid overproduction leads to the buildup of skin cells.
Scales typically develop on joints, such as elbows and knees. However, they may develop anywhere on your body, including hands, feet, neck, scalp, face.
Some facts:
1. Psoriasis is not contagious.
2. Doctors are unclear about causes of psoriasis, genetics and immune system plays major roles.
3. About 33% people with psoriasis may develop psoriatic arthritis.
Psoriasis triggers:
External “triggers” may start a new bout of psoriasis which includes Stress, alcohol, injury, some medication and infections.
Treatment: Unfortunately, psoriasis has no cure, but treatments aim is to manage symptoms.
1. Creams and ointments applied directly to the skin. This is for mild to moderate psoriasis.
2. People with moderate to severe psoriasis, may need to oral or injected medications.
3. Light therapy: uses ultraviolet (UV) or natural light can also help.
Prevention: While you can't prevent psoriasis, you can manage it by watching your diet.
Avoiding foods like red meat, refined sugar, processed foods, and dairy can help reduce inflammation.
