How Urban Digital Twins Transform Mobility
By 2050, around 70% of people worldwide will live in cities, as stated by the United Nations. Urbanization, limited space, pollution, and climate change are pushing urban planners to find new solutions. They aim to make cities smart, sustainable, and efficient despite changing challenges. Urban digital twins are emerging as decisive tool here, poised to revolutionize cities on a global scale.
Modeling a Car-lite District in Singapore
Comprising 10 neighborhoods, 40,000 residential units and 360,000 square meters of gross floor area (GFA) for commercial development, the East Coast Extension is expected to become an increasingly busy area of Singapore. This presents several challenges for urban planners, who must plan for an environment that is suitable for residents, pedestrians, and vehicles, without compromising ease of mobility.
A major challenge is the potential problems that arise from having a car-centered urban plan. By extension, commercial and residential development in the area will lead to an exponential increase in the number of residents and visitors.

Smarter Signal Priority for Safer and More Sustainable Mobility
Mobility is arguably one of the most essential accessibility and sustainability building blocks of a Smart City. It is critical that Emergency Vehicle Preemption (EVP) and Transit Signal Priority (TSP) systems be capable of actively navigate emergency and priority vehicles through an increasingly connected ecosystem and roadway.
Econolite’s Centracs® Priority is an innovative solution to traffic signal priority that integrates with existing and future network systems and, unlike traditional systems, actively alleviates traffic congestion often resulting from signal preemption and priority events. It is a dynamically optimized signal priority system that leverages cloud-based computing, network integration, and robust controller software technologies. Centracs Priority significantly improving safety by reducing emergency vehicle response times, as well as delivering highly efficient transit priority control.
Centracs Priority is a smarter alternative to outdated siloed EVP and TSP systems. Centracs Priority greatly improves efficiency, emergency response times, and transit on-time performance. Centracs Priority leverages GPS, fixed-route Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), and Automotive Vehicle Location (AVL) systems currently used by emergency, fire, transit, and traffic control agencies, providing intersection ETA to controllers along an entire route.
Recent Centracs Priority TSP and EVP projects are delivering safer and more sustainable mobility, including the City of Tulsa EVP and TSP, Kansas City Downtown Streetcar, and the Metro Nashville Public Works Murfreesboro Pike Transit Corridor. In addition, the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and City of St. Petersburg, FL Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project was featured on page 9 in the recently published ITS America ITS Technology Use Case Library.
