Publishing Houses, yeah whatever...
Beware of wolves in what? Publishing houses?
Look for a publisher that believes in you. I have dealt with publishing houses like so many have, and paid my dues, never to receive ‘any’ results. I might well as burned my money in the fireplace. To name a few I have dealt with... Page Publishing, iUniverse, Austin Macauley, three who offer the same spin. The one rule I wish someone would have told me. Would have warned me about; Never pay any publishing house. If they don’t want you and your work, there are plenty to keep looking for who will. Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice... If a publishing house cannot afford to publish you, they should never take your money. You are a struggling artist, and being fooled by these houses. If an author is not for your house, if you don’t believe in them, then why take their money? Please don’t say it is because you offer so much when really it is because you don’t care, and all you strive for are starving artists who you can swindle out of funds they don’t have, who you know will never recover those costs because you truly do nothing for them. If your company cannot back an author you should tell the author you are not the publishing house for them, not suck the blood from them, getting them to believe you can do anymore for them than they can do for themselves by self-publishing. The one thing I did learn from this experience dealing with such publishing houses is, you get out of self-publishing a sense of self-worth, not robbed of your dignity and stripped of your self-confidence. What happened to Publishers who believed in authors to achieve success all the way around. I would rather a Publishing House tell me, "WE believe in you but will take 80 percent of all the profits and you will receive 20. WE the Publishing House must go that mile to get you off the ground, but because of your hard work and diligence, WE offer YOU 20 percent of royalties. So, if a publishing house cannot do this, they should not be selling themselves, unless... they are after only the money and could care less about you as an author. This is of course MY OPINION. Have a wonderful day.

5yAmen to that. I've made it a point to stay away from things such as vanity publishing. They should pay YOU, not the other way around.
