Purpose & Giving back: A Journey of Impact

Purpose & Giving back: A Journey of Impact

Welcome to this month’s newsletter, where I explore the driving force behind my work—purpose and giving back. Throughout my career, philanthropy has been a core value, one that energises everything I do. From my local fundraising work in Norfolk, such as supporting FG Juniors which aims to get people enjoying mobility and movement at super sessions in our local reading room, I’ve seen firsthand how small efforts can create a lasting impact.

My focus on mentoring, especially for women and young leaders, is another cornerstone of my journey. Through one-on-one coaching, I aim to empower the next generation of leaders with the tools, resilience, and mindset needed to navigate an evolving world. This is not just professional advice; it’s about helping individuals uncover their unique potential and giving them the confidence to lead with purpose.

Purpose is a commitment to doing good, whether in your immediate community or on a global scale. It’s about fostering resilience and driving positive change. By giving back, we create ripples that grow beyond ourselves, touching lives and strengthening communities. Together, let’s continue this journey of impact, guided by the principles of inclusion, education, and philanthropy.

10 Simple Ways Everyone Can Give Back with Purpose

  1. Volunteer Locally – Get involved in community projects, such as helping at food banks or local schools.
  2. Donate Gently Used Items – Declutter and give items like clothing or books to charities.
  3. Mentor Someone – Share your knowledge with someone starting their career.
  4. Support Local Businesses – Choose small, community-run stores over big chains.
  5. Donate Blood – It’s a small act that can save lives.
  6. Offer Your Skills – Use your expertise to help a charity or non-profit.
  7. Clean Up Public Spaces – Spend a few hours cleaning parks or beaches.
  8. Cook for Others – Prepare meals for someone in need or a neighbour.
  9. Support a Cause Online – Use social media to promote important causes.
  10. Be Kind – Sometimes, the simplest way to give back is by being kind to those around you.

How I like to give back…

My Talk at Norwich Cathedral: Purpose, Philanthropy, and Leadership

I recently had the honour of speaking at Norwich Cathedral, where I shared insights from my personal journey in business and philanthropy. One of the key points I made was that anyone can put up their hand and volunteer—a life lesson I learned early on and continue to live by. It's not just about financial contributions; giving your time and energy can create a powerful impact. This idea has driven much of my work, both in business and philanthropy.

The talk also delved deeply into purpose in business, highlighting the importance of aligning your professional life with your core values. As a result of that speech, I’m now mentoring 9 young individuals off the back of my talk, all of whom are young people interested in business. I have also taken on a purpose-led role with a key school in Norwich, helping to guide young people into business.

But the talk didn’t stop there. I also covered: ⭐️ My personal journey and the key skills that have driven my success in leadership. ⭐️ Why we see so few female CEOs and actionable steps to change that. ⭐️ The future of work, particularly for women in leadership roles, and what we can expect. ⭐️ My top six tips for life and leadership that everyone can take forward.

If you’d like to dive deeper into these topics and gain valuable insights on how to drive purpose and success in your own journey, you can watch the full talk here: Watch the full speech. I hope it inspires you to think differently about your own path to leadership and giving back.

Easy giving…

Sharing positive views, reviews, and feedback is a simple yet impactful way to give back to others. Recognising someone’s hard work, whether through book reviews or professional feedback, helps elevate their efforts, fosters growth, and cultivates a community of support. This is one of the ways I love to contribute, particularly through my book reviews, giving back to authors whose work has resonated with me. It’s about encouraging creativity, offering thoughtful reflections, and helping others discover great reads. Your voice can amplify someone’s success, making this form of giving back truly invaluable.

Elevating Local Communities: How You Can Make a Difference

Giving back doesn’t always have to involve grand gestures or large sums of money—it can start right where you are, in your local community. I’ve found that some of the most rewarding work I’ve done has been right here in Norfolk. Through small, consistent contributions, such as helping to fund sports equipment or volunteering my time to mentor young athletes, I’ve seen firsthand how small efforts can create a lasting impact.

But this isn’t just about my journey—it’s about yours too. Think about the organisations in your area that resonate with your values. Whether it’s helping at a local youth centre, supporting small businesses, or volunteering your skills to assist a community project, your involvement can make a world of difference. Start by identifying what you’re passionate about and match that with local needs.

Ask yourself: What local cause can I invest in that aligns with my personal or professional mission? It could be as simple as giving an hour of your time or sharing your expertise with a group in need. The important thing is to start, and you’ll be amazed at how quickly your contribution ripples through the community.

Purpose in Action: Bringing the Community Together with the “Happy Bus”

One of my deepest passions is connecting people who may have become more isolated than they might like and i’m excited to share the latest step in that journey-the launch of Sally the Happy Bus named by the team after my dear brilliant joyful friend Sally Bailey who died this year after a courageous battle with cancer.

The Dereham Meeting Point has been a vital space for our community since its founding in 1988. Over the years, it has become more than just a centre—it’s a lifeline for people over 55, those living with disabilities, dementia, or in need of extra support. The aim has always been to create a warm, welcoming environment where people can enjoy a cuppa, take part in activities, and feel a true sense of belonging. However, I’ve come to realise that access to this special place has been a challenge for some—particularly those who live in more remote villages like Gressenhall, Longham, Beeston, Beetley, and Wendling.

That’s where the Happy Bus comes in. With the help of Shonette Mooney, our incredible Centre Manager, and the support of the Chair and Trustees, we’ve raised the funds to make this dream a reality. The Happy Bus, complete with space for two wheelchairs and an electronic platform for easy access, will transport people from these surrounding villages to the Centre, making it possible for even more members of our community to experience the connection and joy that the DMP offers.

For me, this isn’t just about providing transport—it’s about ensuring that no one is left out or isolated. Everyone deserves the chance to be part of a supportive community, to share a laugh over tea, and to enjoy the activities that bring people together. By expanding the reach of the DMP, we’re not just offering a service; we’re continuing the Centre’s legacy of care and inclusion.

Why This Matters

This project is deeply personal to me because it’s a tangible expression of my belief in the power of community and connection. Whether it’s through my local fundraising efforts or larger projects like this one, I’ve always felt that my purpose is to bring people together, especially those who may be struggling with isolation or lack of support. The Happy Bus represents that mission in action—helping people overcome barriers and ensuring that they have access to a space that can improve their quality of life.

Having been involved with the DMP for a short time, I’ve seen the incredible impact it has on its visitors. From the games and memory clubs to the music mornings and art classes, the Centre is a place where people can reconnect with their passions and meet new friends. By introducing the Happy Bus, we can extend this reach to those who may not have been able to come before—creating a more inclusive community where everyone feels welcome and valued.

The Happy Bus is just the beginning, and we’ve recruited great volunteer drivers who share our passion for supporting the community. We have started the village pick ups and the feedback has been superb!

Incredible Update: Gressenhall Play Park Crowdfunding Nears £100k! 🎉

I’m beyond excited to share that we’ve now nearly raised £100,000 for the Gressenhall Play Park Improvement Project! The fundraising team appointed by the Parish Council are sensational, plus a huge thanks to the amazing support from our community—we’ve smashed our initial goal! And with Sport England matching the £7,500, we are on a roll to finalise our Phase 2 programme, including an amazing zip wire! The sound of laughter from the playing field as children enjoy their MUGA and BMX track is so uplifting for everyone.

We’re so close to reaching our final goal—if you haven’t had a chance to contribute yet, it’s not too late to get involved! Every little helps in making a huge impact for the Gressenhall community. Check out the project and see how you can support: Gressenhall Play Park Improvement Project

Thank you for being part of something so special! Let’s keep pushing forward! 💪🌟

Purpose & Impact - At The Heart of Giving

From years 5 to 25 I was so so focused on learning and passing the numerous tests necessary to prove to the world I was employable and acceptable!

Then from 25 to 30, I chose wisely who I worked for - finding great mentors, friends, and supporting my family.

Whilst leading and driving huge change from 30 to 45 it was critical I remain teachable, open to new approaches/people and up until the age of 50 using my influence and building an extraordinary foundation of relationships across the world so that now together we give back with purpose and impact

It’s now time - my 6th decade - purpose and impact will be my focus. It fills my heart with joy and my head is full of interventions that can and will make a difference.

6 Lessons on Finding Your Purpose & the Work You Were Meant to do 🙏

As you know I have shared a great deal about Finding your purpose and the work you were meant to do: It seems when people have found their calling, they’ve made tough decisions and sacrifices in order to do the work they were meant to do.

In other words, you don’t just “find” your calling, you fight for it‼

In our LinkedIn live with Manny Amadi & Cain Ullah on purpose: https://lnkd.in/gXF67-zc

We covered many of these elements covered in this superb Ted Ideas Piece: https://lnkd.in/g7CPBvq2

It suggests that whether it was during a career aptitude test, or in a heart-to-heart chat after losing your job, chances are someone has talked to you about how to “find your purpose or calling.” It’s one of those phrases people toss about. But StoryCorps founder Dave Isay takes issue with it - specifically, the verb. “Finding your calling — it’s not passive,” he says. “When people have found their calling, they’ve made tough decisions and sacrifices in order to do the work they were meant to do.”

“People who’ve found their calling have a fire about them,” says Isay, the winner of the 2015 TED Prize. “They’re the people who are dying to get up in the morning and go do their work.”

But for all of us underscores life is no dress rehearsal and a life fully lived is key

Will the Chief Purpose Officer Make The Difference We All Need?⠀

The C-Suite job of the future is here... 🥁 🥁 🥁 the Chief Purpose Officer.⠀

This is the new executive who would lead efforts to set the agenda, own the measures and inform the organisation on what societal issues will be tackled across climate change, inclusion & diversity, sustainability goals, and more. ⠀

Companies are increasingly expected by their employees to act with purpose and impact. Perhaps going hand in hand with a generational shift in the workplace with values and beliefs far outweighing loyalty to a company and job security for younger generations. ⠀

But will this role help or hinder?⠀

It appears from the v interesting Axiom article (https://buff.ly/3ziAtao) that this role has come about to appease employees, customers and shareholders alike, as companies are spending time and money grappling with huge social problems like systemic racism, income inequality and climate change.⠀

Why it matters: In the past, firms generally just had to focus on their bottom lines. Now every political, social and environmental challenge is becoming a corporate concern as well and every employee can influence and affect your brand!⠀

So will this focus on a new C Suite role help or remove responsibility from those in the rest of the organisation? Is it like a CEO who delegates strategy to a Chief Strategy Officer?

Building Bridges Globally: The Power of International Giving

Philanthropy has no borders. My work with the Academies for Youth with Potential in Thailand has taught me that even a small contribution can create a massive ripple effect in communities far from home. While supporting these academies, I’ve seen how access to quality education, vocational training, and personal development opportunities can change lives and uplift entire communities.

For those of you looking to give back on a global scale, you don’t have to start by founding an academy. Instead, consider connecting with established international organisations or causes that align with your mission. Whether it's sponsoring a child’s education, supporting a community’s healthcare needs, or helping to provide clean water solutions in underserved areas, there are countless ways you can contribute to global change.

Ask yourself: What global issues am I passionate about? Then look for ways to get involved, either through donations or hands-on volunteering. Many organisations offer virtual volunteer opportunities, allowing you to make a difference no matter where you are. The beauty of international philanthropy is that, even though you may never meet the people you’re helping, your contribution could transform their lives in ways you can’t imagine.

Aligning Business with Purpose: How Giving Back Can Fuel Your Mission

We often think of philanthropy as separate from our business ventures, but the truth is, when you align your business with a higher purpose, you create a powerful synergy. For me, philanthropy has always been a cornerstone of my career, and I’ve found that giving back has not only enhanced my personal mission but also driven the growth and success of my businesses.

If you’re a business leader, consider how you can incorporate purpose into your work. Can your company sponsor a local charity? Could you start a programme that allows your employees to volunteer on company time? Businesses that prioritise purpose often see a boost in customer loyalty and employee satisfaction, as people naturally gravitate towards companies that are making a positive impact.

Start by asking: How can my business contribute to the greater good? Whether it’s setting aside a percentage of profits for charitable causes or launching a mentorship programme for young professionals, there are endless ways to integrate giving back into your company culture. When you align your business with purpose, you not only enhance your mission but also build a legacy of impact that transcends profits.

Mentoring: A Personal Approach to Giving Back

While large-scale philanthropy can move mountains, some of the most profound impacts come from one-on-one mentorship. Throughout my career, I’ve dedicated time to mentoring young professionals and entrepreneurs, and it’s been one of the most rewarding aspects of giving back. It’s not just about imparting knowledge—it’s about helping someone see their potential and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.

If you’re looking for a personal way to give back, consider mentoring someone in your field. You don’t need years of experience to make a difference; sometimes, all it takes is offering advice, guidance, or even a listening ear. Mentorship is a powerful way to give back because it creates a direct, personal connection that can transform both the mentor and the mentee.

Ask yourself: Who in my network could benefit from my experience? Reach out and offer to meet for coffee, or set up a virtual chat to discuss their goals and challenges. The time you invest in mentoring someone today could pay dividends for them—and for you—years down the line. By helping others succeed, you enhance your own sense of purpose and contribute to a cycle of growth and development that benefits everyone.

Creating Your Own Ripple Effect: The Network of Giving Back

One of the most beautiful things about giving back is the ripple effect it creates. When you give—whether it’s time, resources, or skills—you’re not just helping one person or cause; you’re creating a chain of positive outcomes that can reach far beyond your initial contribution. In my experience, philanthropy has created a network of impact, where one act of kindness or support leads to another.

For example, by supporting educational initiatives, I’ve seen how empowered students go on to become community leaders, paying it forward by helping others. The ripple effect can be felt not only in philanthropy but also in business, where purpose-driven companies inspire their employees, customers, and partners to give back in their own ways.

Think about how you can create your own ripple effect. Ask: What’s one small act of giving I can start with today?Whether it’s donating to a charity, volunteering your time, or simply offering encouragement to someone in need, your actions can create a chain reaction of positivity. When we all contribute, no matter how small, the collective impact can be immense.

The Starfish Thrower

Embracing Tikkun Olam—the commitment to help repair the fabric of society wherever I see it fraying—has been one of the most rewarding journeys of my life. Rather than staying in boardrooms or focusing on administration, I find greater purpose in working directly at the grassroots level, where I can actively support those in my community who need it most. Each small action, no matter how humble, brings me closer to creating meaningful change and strengthening the bonds that hold us all together. I have some very interesting learnings to share!

1. It’s good for all of us to do things we aren’t the best at! Driving, navigation and logistics are not my strengths. Yet they are #skills necessary to deliver care packages to hospitals, surgeries, health & safety centres and NHS offices. When learning a new skill or practising an old one, give it a go. Determination is key!

2. Followship is very important! We all need a leader to keep us accountable and on task. Any plan needs a clear objective, output measures plus defined roles and responsibilities powerfully communicated. It’s been valuable for me to listen and take direction as a volunteer rather than give it!

3. Brilliant people make the difference in any situation! The scale of what the front line critical workers are doing is truly humbling. Having led businesses globally, we need brilliant people to succeed. It’s so evident that the NHS and key workers are bringing their whole human strength to support society right now!

Like the Starfish Thrower every little action we take matters to someone and the personal learnings will help us navigate our new normal.

Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter and I hope it resonates with you. Warmest Harriet

I love this article. I often hear people say that they want to do a different job that brings more purpose and meaning, but there's so much you can do in your current role (whatever it is) and outside of it.
