#POETRY

Is there still a place for poetry in our attention-deficit age? I believe there is. In fact, it’s vital that poetry thrives. Poets are those who reflect deeply and speak artfully about the human condition, life’s journey and the state of the world. Poets can be hip-hop rappers, business leaders, or 16-year old climate activists. You might even be a poet and not know it. I’ve started ending my talks with a poem called Change the World and I notice that it engages people at a different level. What you say is important. So is how you say it.

#INTEGRATION

Integrated value is a way to understand sustainable transformation from a whole-systems perspective. ‘Whole-systems’ refers to the complex living web of socio-ecological relationships that combine to create, maintain and organize life on earth. Integrated value is created when we apply cross-system innovation that makes our world simultaneously more secure, shared, sustainable, smart and satisfying. The question then arises, how can we achieve integrated value in practice? One approach is to apply the 7 facets of integrated value management (IVM).

Your life is a giant puzzle / A maze of mystery and secrets / But what are you searching for? / What is the code that needs cracking / At the heart of life’s enigma?

It’s about finding out what you like / And working hard to ensure / That it becomes what you’re good at / Because life’s too short and difficult / To be doing what you don’t like

It’s about finding out who you love / And taking care to ensure / That they remain your main priority / Because life’s too long and incredible / To be with anyone you don’t love

It’s about finding out who you are / And taking steps to ensure / That you love that person unconditionally / Because life’s too strange and precious / To be chasing someone else’s shadow

Your life is an epic expedition / A trail of valleys and summits / And what you are moving towards / What you are discovering along the way / Is an answer to life’s question

Disrupting the Future – Great ideas for Creating a Much Better Future is the result of a process of consultation by Jorgen Randers following the publication of "2052: A Global Forecast for the Next 40 Years". It is a remarkable collection of ideas and proposals by a diverse set of thought-leaders, each of which has responded in their own creative way to Jorgen Randers’ concluding challenge in 2052: ‘Please help me make my forecast wrong. Together we could create a much better world.’

#CHOICE
We always have a choice: Do we respond to those who hurt us with understanding or resentment? Do we forgive mistakes? Do we stay positive in hard times? These are difficult choices to make; they take mental resilience and emotional toughness. But they are choices, and we are the ones who choose.

This episode questions whether CSR itself is too little too late, or even a red herring. Is CSR a distraction from the more fundamental transformation (perhaps revolution even) of the capitalist business model which is needed? And as CSR becomes an established professional practice, will it take as given that its purpose is to benefit those who employ its professionals, rather than a primary goal of transforming the world? I explore a global Crash and Burn scenario, with growing ecological and social degradation and contrast this with a Rise and Shine scenario, which requires systemic change.

#TIPPING

A key element of circularity in systems is the existence of feedback loops, which are processes that cycle back on themselves to either reinforce or diminish the original effect. Unless we identify, understand, and respond to these feedback loops, we can find ourselves with exponential growth and system collapses. More than 10 years ago, climate scientists identified numerous climate-change tipping points. Each of these, of which there are now 16, creates a self-reinforcing feedback loop in the climate system that perpetuates global warming.
