The Qualities that comprise HUMILITY

The Qualities that comprise HUMILITY

I have three precious things which I hold fast and prize. The first is gentleness; the second is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps me from putting myself before others. Be gentle and you can be bold; be frugal and you can be liberal; avoid putting yourself before others and you can become a leader among men.”  Lao Tzu

The American Psychological Association defines Humility as the quality of being humble, characterized by a low focus on the self, an accurate (not over- or underestimated) sense of one’s accomplishments and worth, and an acknowledgment of one’s limitations, imperfections, mistakes, gaps in knowledge, and so on.

Humility is often seen as low self-confidence. On the other hand, however, humble leaders are self-assured with who they are and very clear about both their strengths &  weaknesses. It’s never about them. It is about the team & the qualities the members bring in. Great listeners, they share the spotlight very willingly, because they do not feel threatened! They are completely connected to

#voiceinme.

"We come nearest to the great when we are great in humility," said Rabindranath Tagore. The beauty of anchoring shows is you see the true nature of successful people literally behind the screens. As an audience member, our understanding of a person and his/her journey is based on what we read or what perspective is placed before us. There are a lot of assumptions. The green room is where they are themselves. A common quality I noticed in a lot of successful people is Humility. It struck me how very easily we label them. However, they are as normal as us when they are themselves. Therefore decided to explore HUMILITY as an acronym for qualities they possessed that lead them to success.

Humor: This is such an important quality. Not only are they genuinely funny they also take themselves very lightly. It takes a lot to laugh at yourself when the world thinks you are a hero.

“Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is.” Francis Bacon

Understanding: When a leader makes a mistake & admits to it, it makes it easy on the team. When a leader acknowledges someone for work that helped, it makes the team member feel special.

“Become the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily, even if you had no title or position.” Brian Tracy

Mindful: This is such an important quality as far as leadership is concerned. The beauty of this is an intimate connection to the internal compass:

“Mindful leadership entails being aware of one’s internal compass. It enables a leader to respond to a situation as it arises, to respond to the reality of constant changes from a place of deep calm and focus, and to have the presence of mind to face the reality of any situation.” Maria Gonzalez, author of Mindful Leadership: The 9 Ways to Self-Awareness, Transforming Yourself and Inspiring Others

Inspiring: "Every leader who makes his team members bring out their best is inspiring.

"Average Leaders raise the bar on themselves: Good leaders raise the bar for others: Great leaders inspire others to raise their own bar" Orrin Woodward

Learning: Keeping ourselves abreast with the latest technology, with an open mind helps us expand & this curiosity will keep us as leaders relevant.                                                                                                                   “Real learning gets to the heart of what it means to be human. Through learning we re-create ourselves. Through learning, we become able to do something we never were able to do. Through learning, we reperceive the world and our relationship to it. Through learning, we extend our capacity to create and to be part of the generative process of life. There is within each of us a deep hunger for this type of learning.”  Peter M. Senge in The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization.

Intelligent: The nudge is subtle, and the movement is definite when the leader is intelligent! It’s not about theory alone but the practical aspects too.

" A leader. . .is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind." Nelson Mandela

Thought Leadership- A leader with a vision for the future is called a thought leader. Someone who has clarity & focuses on using what he has to create what he wants.

“ A visionary is a leader of excellence who sees what others do not see, who achieves for now and plans for the future, who positively impacts different generations and raises up other visionaries.” Onyi Anyado

You: The way you as a leader function is by walking the talk! It’s about what you bring to the table as your prime quality. The team is watching you more than listening to you. Watching you lead should be proof enough for what the team needs.

“The most powerful Leadership tool you have is your own example.” John Wooden

Thus HUMILITY is all about Bringing in Humor, Understanding, Mindful, Inspiring, Learning, Intelligent, Thought leadership, and You.
