The Questioning Edge

The Questioning Edge

Ever noticed how a single question can completely shift the trajectory of a conversation? I’ve been thinking a lot about this since reading an insightful piece in Harvard Business Review, The Art of Asking Smarter Questions (HBR, 2024). It hit home how critical this skill is across every facet of what we do, whether it’s in clinical OT, leading a team, or navigating building a business.

Clinical OT: Asking the Right Questions, Not Just Any Questions

In occupational therapy, it's easy to fall into the routine of asking the standard set of questions, we all have our assessment rhythm and know what we need to get the key information. But what if we flipped the script? Instead of "How are you managing with daily tasks?" what if we asked, "What does a successful day look like for you?" It’s a subtle shift, but it opens up a whole new world of understanding. We move from merely gathering data to actually uncovering the lived experiences that shape our clients' daily realities.

By more deeply considering what questions we can ask it shifts from ticking boxes to peeling back layers we may not have otherwise. It's like being a detective—each question is a clue that brings us closer to understanding the full picture. And the right questions can make a seismic difference in what supports are provided.

Coaching as a Leader: Turning Questions into Growth Opportunities

As a leader, I've learned that the best revelations often happen not when I have all the answers, but when I ask the right questions. The real power lies in creating a space where team members feel comfortable exploring ideas, voicing uncertainties, and even admitting they don't have it all figured out. Something as simple as, "What do you think could be done differently here?" or "What do you need to feel more supported?" can transform the dynamic.

Coaching is about asking the kind of questions that provoke thought, foster accountability, and encourage growth. When you see that lightbulb moment—when they connect the dots themselves—it’s incredibly rewarding.

Entrepreneurship: The Power of Strategic Questioning

In entrepreneurship, asking the right questions is often what separates the successful ventures from the rest. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle, but taking a moment to ask, "Is this direction aligning with our core values?" or "What would our clients say about this decision?" can provide clarity in the midst of chaos.

One of my favourite questions to ask myself is "What aren't we seeing here?" or "What is my blind spot and bias" It’s a nudge to look beyond the obvious and consider different angles. Sometimes the best ideas come from these moments of introspection.

Tying It All Together: The Common Thread

Whether we’re in a clinical session, a team meeting, or a strategy discussion, the art of asking smarter questions is the thread that ties it all together. It’s about being curious, intentional, and open to what might unfold. And yes, sometimes it's about being brave enough to ask the tough questions—the ones that make us all a bit uncomfortable but lead to the most growth.

So, what’s the smartest question you’ve asked lately? Or perhaps the one you wish you had asked sooner?

❤️ Questions are everything. People come to us as OTs and they want answers but we are at our best (I believe) when we instead ask better questions. Uncover new truths. Discover new stories.

Great article Lauren. I like asking 'what would you do if I wasn't here' - my blind spot is having the answers to quickly which can take away the learning for the person.
