Questions & quotes - I want to hear from you!

Questions & quotes - I want to hear from you!

Hi,

I don't know about you but I'm a little overwhelmed with everything happening (and not happening) in the climate space right now...not to mention the democracy space.

You know, the little things.

Anyway, you already know what I think about those.

This week I want to hear from you.

Because I love reading your messages, getting to know y'all a bit better, and continuing to figure out ways to make this newsletter more useful for you - wherever you are on your climate journey.

So here are some questions I have for you - take your pick and answer in the comments below!

  • How are you feeling? What are you worried about? Excited about?
  • What did you think of that novel of a newsletter on imagining the better future world we're working to build? Is there anything I missed that you'd add to the vision?
  • Where are you on your climate journey?
  • Tell me about your climate work. What are you working on right now? What are your goals? What are the biggest challenges you're facing? (just last week I spoke with someone working on a climate action plan for their local government, and someone else who decided to transition into a career in climate!)
  • Do you have any questions or topics you'd like me to address in a future newsletter, podcast, or CS community meeting?
  • What do you want more of? What do you want less of?

I really would love to hear from you.

And I'll try my best, but I can't promise to respond to every single person's comment. I will, however, read all of them and they'll help me to help you (and other people like you!) on your climate journey going forward.

Also, I encourage you to (kindly!) respond to, support, and/or help each other out in the comments where it makes sense to :)

Lastly, I haven't shared random quotes in ages. And I love quotes. So here are a few I think you may appreciate:

"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity" - Albert Einstein

“There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew.” ― Marshall Mcluhan

"We must each lead a way of life with self-awareness and compassion, to do as much as we can. Then, whatever happens we will have no regrets." - Dalai Lama

“The only thing standing between you and your goal is the story you keep telling yourself as to why you can't achieve it.” - Jordan Belfort

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” - Maya Angelou

Take care of yourself!

Ryan

Hi Ryan, thanks for this post, here are my answers! - How are you feeling? What are you worried about? Excited about? I am worried about our future, I am scared about thinking of the year 2060 and how our climate will have changed, I do hope for the best, but realistically speaking I do not see countries keeping their climate neutral goals, a lot of it is just political, I do not understand how for example China is planning on changing its complete industry to reduce its CO2 emissions, and the climate will change faster and more drastically and I do not look forward to the generations to come who will live on this planet... however I am excited for the change to come, and I am positive that there are many people on this planet with great intentions and they will hopefully be the ones to bring on this positive change. - What did you think of that novel of a newsletter on imagining the better future world we're working to build? Is there anything I missed that you'd add to the vision? I absolutely loved it, I found it so informative and especially very positive and creative at the end, speaking about the smells and the tastes and what we will see, it honestly gave me goosebumps and I really hope it will come true. Personally I do not think you missed anything, I mean there are so many different types of writing styles and informative papers and this was just supposed to be a good informative and creative way to explain our future, it could of course have been more scientific and full of numbers, but then many readers swift off, so I liked it just the way it was! :) - Where are you on your climate journey?  Pufff, yes.... :D Good question, I try my best recycling all my materials however I still can't get away from buying plastic packaged items because stores (in Germany) just offer sooo much plastic packaged items, and the sustainable stores where you can buy soap bars and all foods with no packaging are very rare and then also super expensive which I can't afford as a student. However I am trying my best, I inform myself daily about new sustainability & climate stories and I share my thoughts with my friends which I believe is super important - to share information and question everything. - Tell me about your climate work. What are you working on right now? What are your goals? What are the biggest challenges you're facing? (just last week I spoke with someone working on a climate action plan for their local government, and someone else who decided to transition into a career in climate!) - I just started a internship in the ESG Risk & Compliance sector and am learning a lot about the reporting initiatives around sustainability in companies and believe it is definitely vital for the future of our planet. I am learning a lot and slowly on the right track career wise, as a student having studied business administration but having strong social impact and sustainability interests I felt a bit lost on my search for meaning but slowly im getting there and I am excited to be consulting and auditing firms in terms of SDG goal reaching and CO2 emission reduction. I am not quite sure what my next steps will be, currently I am searching for a masters degree to further specialise myself in the climate and international development sector to then be able to better position myself in the job market and make an impact for our world and its climate. What kind of masters would you recommend me? - Do you have any questions or topics you'd like me to address in a future newsletter, podcast, or CS community meeting? I would find it interesting to hear from you what you believe are the biggest changes needed to become climate neutral and give future generations a healthy planet to live on. And I would also love to hear how realistic the different options are to you, and what you are perhaps angry about or frustrated on this climate neutral path, in terms of what policies, countries or people are standing in the way of this change happening. I find it all very psychological and political, its all ego- and money-driven people and their companies, and the "megalomania" of our society, so many people want more, more stuff, more shiny, more of everything, I don't see how there will ever be a complete shift of perspective of the inherent psychological traits of humans to want more (obviously not everyone is like this, but many, look at so many rulers of various countries...). And as I mentioned in a LinkedIn post of mine earlier, society has a psychological distance to the consequences of climate change, the worst of climate change is still to come and we are not instinctually motivated to make a change, as we will not be the ones suffering under the worst consequences that are still to come, so how do we shift societies perspective and motivate them to bring on change in a different way other than marketing, press and building more start-ups that sell sustainable clothes or washing products or whatever, I feel like they are just making profitable businesses out of it for them using the "sustainability focus" as a selling story, but they do not actually care. - What do you want more of? What do you want less of? I have no preferences, I am just impressed of your work and find your initiative to be building this platform very cool and am happy I stumbled upon your profile and your informative newsletters! Just keep informing us with what is going on in the sustainability sector, interesting might also be what kind of firms are at the forefront of creating an impact, whether these are just food chain or retail companies and we know what firms to buy from, or whether these are investment companies or cool consultancies or NGOs that are bringing on change in the sector! Sorry for rambling on, thought I'd share my thoughts! All the best, Rosa

Hey there Ryan, just came across your newsletter, and I would love to tell you a bit about where we're at with our climate journey. I'm Ilanit, from Israel, living in China for the past 2.5 years. Joined with an Israeli company that makes a difference for the past 30 years. I was thinking I'm heading back home, but than I understood that to make a change I need to be at the one place that it matters. 1.4 billion people... That's a huge mass, and difference. We are SD Eco focuses on Net-Zero GHG emissions, Organic Matter selected recycling, facilitating, tracking, and controlling Urban and industry wastage disposal/by-products. Generate sustainable solutions under the Circular Economy Concept "Zero Wastage". Provides Smart Tech Solutions to redirect & abate food wastage, rediverting "high nutritional wastage" into high quality and safe livestock feed. Tried to make it as short as possible, and we just got started here. It's still a long journey to go, but we are certain of the change we can make. Would love to continue reading you and subscribe to future newsletters. Thank you for caring Ilanit
