A Quick Guide to Social Media Metrics

A Quick Guide to Social Media Metrics

Tracking the right social media metrics tells you whether or not your strategy is working and highlights areas that need improvement. I’ve aggregated the most important social media metrics so you can identify the ones that are relevant for you to keep track of.

Awareness Metrics

  • Audience Growth Rate: This is the rate at which your follower count is growing. The audience growth rate provides insight into how your social media presence has expanded over time.
  • Follower Count: The total number of followers your social media profiles have. Follower count provides a baseline for measuring other metrics like engagement and reach.

  • Impressions: The total number of times your content has been displayed. Impressions help you understand the potential exposure of your posts.

  • Reach: Measures how many unique users have seen your content. Reach indicates your brand’s visibility on social media.

Engagement Metrics

  • Amplification Rate: The ratio of shares per post compared to the total number of followers. The amplification rate shows how much your followers share your content with their networks.
  • Engagement Rate: The level of interaction your content receives, including likes, comments, shares, and saves. A high engagement rate means that your content resonates with your audience.

  • Virality Rate: Calculated by dividing number of shares by number of impressions. Virality Rate lets you know how quickly and broadly your content is being shared.

ROI Metrics

  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): The ratio of users who click on your content compared to the number of total users who view it. ROI measures the effectiveness of your calls to action or CTAs.

  • Conversion Rate: The percentage of users who take a desired action (ex: make a purchase) after clicking on your content. Conversion rate is used to demonstrate the success of your conversion strategies.

  • Cost-Per-Click (CPC): Tells you how much you're spending for each click on your paid ads. A lower CPC indicates more cost-efficient campaigns.
  • Cost-Per-Lead (CPL): The average cost incurred to acquire one lead. CPL measures the efficiency of lead generation campaigns. The lower, the better.

  • Cost Per Thousand Impressions (CPM): Calculates the cost for every thousand impressions your ad receives. CPM is another way to measure the cost-effectiveness of your advertising efforts.
  • Return on Ad Spend (ROAS): The revenue generated for every dollar spent on advertising. ROAS helps you understand the profitability of your ad campaigns.

Share of Voice & Sentiment Metrics

  • Social Sentiment: Assesses the tone and emotion behind social media mentions of your brand. Sentiment helps you understand public perception.

  • Social Share of Voice (SSoV): Measures the percentage of mentions your brand receives compared to your competitors. SSoV benchmarks your brand's presence in your industry.

Video Metrics

  • Video Completion Rate: The percentage of viewers who watched your video from start to finish. A high completion rate suggests that your video content is engaging and holds viewers' attention.

  • Video Views: The number of times your video has been watched. Views are a straightforward indicator of a video's popularity and reach.

Conclusion

Empower your marketing strategy by understanding and tracking social media metrics. By focusing on the right metrics, you can measure the effectiveness of your campaigns, make informed decisions, and continuously improve your social media presence. Of course, the key metrics you should focus on will vary based on your goals. Great tips Victoria Banaszczyk. Share of Voice and Sentiment value are always last referred to from what I’ve seen - but it’s such a great marker to track your position in market.
