Quick Reference Holiday Stress Less Guide
Given the background of myself and my husband, my family celebrates Hanukkah, Christmas and honors Kwanza as well. Every year we try to learn more about Kwanza, because it is not a holiday either of us grew up celebrating.
Regardless of which holiday we are celebrating on any given day, we always do our best to bring it back to love, gratitude, joy and compassion. This is what I wish for you this holiday season. No matter what you do or do not celebrate, I hope you choose to bring it back to love, gratitude, joy and compassion.
Obviously, this is easier said than done for many families. The holidays, even during a pandemic, can become busy and bombarded by materials things. the intangible gifts and exchanges can fall to the wayside.
To help reduce the stress and frustration, and instead, to enhance the joy, laughter and compassion, I'm sharing a few quick tips below, to help during this holiday season.
- Feeling down? Low potassium, Vitamin D and Vitamin B levels could be at play. Check to see if this is the case for you! Supplements are available over the counter (check with your medical provider, as needed).
- Frustrated with loved ones? Schedule time to spend doing something you enjoy, and actually follow through with the commitment to yourself. Even if only for 5 minutes, it demonstrates to you AND to them that your needs matter.
- Feeling overwhelmed? Give yourself permission to be imperfect. No one can be perfect anyway. Say "NO" when you want to, and say "YES" when you want to.
- Not feeling heard? Ask yourself what you aren't getting, and once you'e clear on that, ask yourself whichever applies A) What boundary can I clearly state to get that need met or B) What can I do to meet this need for myself right now.
- Groggy or low energy? Sugar is prominent during the holidays. Be sure you still move your body every day, eat some fruits and vegetables each day, and drink plenty of water. It's tempting to let your sleep schedule get totally thrown off, but keeping somewhat of a consistent sleep schedule will help you feel more energized and rested.
- Feeling resentful and unappreciated? Focus your attention on what is within your control, and remind yourself that you do not have to "tolerate" being mistreated. Remind yourself that your level of productivity does not determine your worth.
Remember, the holidays are not about getting everything done, they are about joy, love, compassion and gratitude.
