Rachel Botsman on ideas: "I'm looking to see if I'm wrong, not if I'm right."
This is the newsletter for the Hello Monday podcast. You can listen to today's episode here, or below:
This episode is devoted to ideas. Where do your best ones come from?
Today we'll hear from Rachel Botsman. She’s a lot of things: writer, teacher, and host of a podcast called Rethink Moments with Rachel Botsman. But mostly she’s a career thinker. Her gift is that she can absorb the complexity of the present moment and name what’s going on. She crystallizes ideas.
I think some people believe ideas just show up. A lightbulb goes off. But really, it’s the opposite. Says Rachel: "If you're looking for paradigm shifts. Changes in behavior, changes in technology, changes in the way that people want to consume things, that takes time." There’s a process to developing the ideas that really matter.
I first started paying attention to Rachel when I was a tech reporter. She wrote this book called What’s Mines is Yours about how humans are wired to share, and technology enables that. This idea of sharing your house, or car with strangers to make money was so new back then. Companies like Airbnb and Uber were JUST launching. In today's conversation, Rachel shares her process for developing ideas large enough and strong enough to have impact on business and society.
I hope this episode pushes your own thinking. You can find the episode here. Then please share your thoughts in the comments.

Keynote Speaker 🎤 Live UNMUTED™ | Singer-Songwriter 🎶 TEDx | I unleash confidence, courage, purpose, and potential in people so they are more engaged and fulfilled at work and in the world 🦚 #UnmuteYourself Host
2yI love Rachel Botsman’s idea of picking something up and sitting with it before deciding whether to dig deeper into it or set it back down, Jessi Hempel. I started writing about my idea about what I stood for and what to call my business back in 2015 in my journals before I launched it in 2019. As someone who muted myself for much of my life due to fear and insecurities - my singing voice, my emotions, my needs and desires, my vulnerabilities and struggles, etc. - I knew that when I launched my business in September 2019 that I wanted to call it UNMUTED. People were immediately receptive to the idea. Little did I know what was going to happen when the pandemic hit seven months later and everyone was saying, #unmuteyourself, to each other on zoom. It just affirmed what I felt about the importance of launching what I did when I did. And now I unmute myself as a speaker and a singer and even share singing videos here on LinkedIn and invite other people to do the same on my biweekly LinkedIn live show. I’ve gone all in on the idea and, to Rachel’s point, it feels so much like ME that I know it’s what I’m meant to be representing. Thanks for another great episode (and happy early birthday, Jessi Hempel! 🎉 )
