Rainforest regeneration: Communities and innovation
We deeply understand that the future of our planet depends on the health and vitality of its rainforests. As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, we have been pioneering innovative solutions for rainforest regeneration, with a strong focus on integrating indigenous knowledge.
Throughout our history, we’ve witnessed the evolution of both technology and community integration to help nurture the lungs of our planet. In this piece, we’ll explore a little further the latest techniques and technologies to help keep our rainforests healthy.
Innovations in rainforest regeneration
Around the world, new and innovative methods are reshaping how we approach rainforest conservation. Technologies like drone reforestation are playing a significant role. Drones can plant thousands of trees daily, significantly accelerating reforestation efforts and ensuring that vast areas of degraded land are restored quickly and efficiently. This technological advancement allows for precise planting in hard-to-reach areas, ensuring that even the most remote parts of the rainforest receive attention.
Agroforestry is another vital method that is gaining traction. This approach integrates trees and shrubs into agricultural systems, enhancing biodiversity, promoting sustainable agriculture, and restoring forest cover. It’s a win-win for both the environment and local farmers, who benefit economically while contributing to ecological restoration. Agroforestry systems can include a variety of crops, from fruit trees to medicinal plants, creating a diversified and resilient agricultural model that supports both local communities and the broader ecosystem.
Bioeconomy initiatives are perhaps the most crucial element. These projects focus on sustainably harnessing the economic potential of natural resources. By developing products from forest resources such as natural cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and sustainable foods, we create economic incentives for conservation, ensuring that the forest remains a valuable and protected resource. The bioeconomy approach not only helps in conserving the rainforest but also promotes economic development, reducing the pressure on forests from unsustainable and illegal practices.
Working in harmony with communities
Indigenous communities have lived in harmony with the rainforests for generations. Their deep understanding of the ecosystem is invaluable for effective conservation efforts. At Natura &Co, we prioritise collaboration with these communities, recognising that their traditional practices and knowledge are crucial for sustainable and culturally sensitive regeneration efforts.
Working with indigenous communities allows us to identify native species for reforestation, understand seasonal patterns, and employ sustainable harvesting techniques. This collaboration ensures that our conservation strategies are scientifically robust and culturally respectful, leading to more effective and sustainable outcomes.
Indigenous knowledge often encompasses a holistic view of the environment, considering the intricate relationships between different species and their habitats, which is essential for developing comprehensive conservation strategies.

Our commitment to the Amazon
Our commitment to the Amazon is a key part of our Climate Action and Regeneration strategy. As part of our Commitment to Life sustainability vision, we pledge to protect and regenerate 3 million hectares of Amazon forest and increase the number of our agro-extractivist sourcing communities to 45. This effort is aimed at ensuring sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local economies. By expanding our network of sourcing communities, we help create sustainable livelihoods that discourage deforestation and promote forest conservation.
One of our significant initiatives is the development of 55 Amazonian ingredients through innovative bioeconomy projects. By increasing our spending on raw ingredients from the Amazonian socio-bioeconomy fourfold, we support local economies and ensure sustainable resource use. This not only provides economic opportunities for local communities but also encourages the sustainable management of forest resources, aligning economic development with environmental conservation.
Natura’s Ekos Alma fragrance is a prime example of sustainable sourcing. Launched in 2019, this perfume uses ingredients like priprioca root and Copaifera oil, sourced in harmony with the natural cycles of the forest. The limited annual availability of this product highlights the importance of respecting nature’s rhythms and promoting sustainable harvesting practices. By aligning product availability with the natural cycles, we ensure that our sourcing methods do not deplete the resources and maintain the ecological balance of the rainforest.
Our engagement with the forest and its communities
We aim to engage 20 million people in the “living Amazon” cause and double the value shared with our communities. Our investments in local communities are designed to promote sustainable practices and enhance the economic benefits of conservation. Supporting these communities is crucial for creating a model that balances development with environmental stewardship. By fostering a deep connection between consumers and the Amazon, we hope to raise awareness and drive action towards rainforest conservation.
Our involvement in initiatives like Concertação pela Amazônia (Consultation for the Amazon) reflects our commitment to collective action. This collaboration brings together NGOs, academia, political actors, and companies to promote sustainable development in the rainforest, fostering a platform for sharing knowledge and best practices.
No one individual or organisation holds all the cards or has all the answers. Collaborating across sectors and specialisms is essential for addressing the complex challenges of rainforest conservation, as each organisation brings diverse perspectives and expertise to develop comprehensive solutions.
Rainforest regeneration is a complex but essential task that requires innovation, collaboration, and a deep respect for indigenous knowledge.
By joining forces and leveraging both modern innovations and traditional wisdom, we can make significant strides in protecting and regenerating rainforests worldwide.
Together, we can ensure that these vital ecosystems continue to thrive for generations to come. Our commitment to the Amazon is not just about conserving a forest, but also about preserving a vital component of our global ecosystem that supports biodiversity, regulates the climate, and sustains millions of people.
