At long last the rains are here! 

While the rains are very welcome and much needed in that they provide us with the water to grow our crops and fill our reservoirs with water for drinking and cleaning, rains on the roads create extremely dangerous conditions for us motorists.

When it rains, and especially in the first 10 minutes of a storm, roads can become slick due to engine oil and grease buildup that has yet to wash away. That is when you are most likely to experience hydroplaning – losing control of your vehicle at high speed.

 Below are our top 10 Tips for safely driving in the rain:

1. Wait for the storm to pass – If possible delay your journey to avoid difficult conditions
2. Avoid bald tyres – when tyres are worn, the grooves in the tyres cannot move water fast enough to avoid hydroplaning
3. Turn on your headlights – this helps you see better and other drivers to see you
4. Slow down – you are less likely to hydroplane below 60 kph
5. Leave room between vehicles – with reduced visibility and increased braking distance, giving yourself an extra second or two to avoid problems could keep you from having an accident
6. Avoid puddles and standing water – even the best tyres cannot move water fast enough to keep you from hydroplaning through deep water
7. Check your wiper blades – good visibility is key to avoiding accidents on the road
8. Keep your air conditioning on – this will stop your windows from misting up
9. Don’t use your rear fog lights – they can mask your brake lights and dazzle drivers behind you
10. Fill up with fuel before you travel – getting stuck in traffic will increase your fuel consumption
