Spotlight | Whitnie Narcisse

Whitnie Narcisse is an Operating Partner at First Round Capital where she manages talent, go-to-market, expertise, mentorship, community resources, and tech team and has notably built out First Round’s Fast Track, Recruiter Track, Manager Track, Designer Track programs, and more. At First Round, Whitnie has also been crowned the unofficial Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion champion. Prior to her current role, she worked in talent acquisition at Bloom Energy and SPMB, and began her career teaching eighth grade science with Teach for America. She is a proud Boston College and UNC Kenan-Flagler alumni.

Why is diversity and inclusion important in the investment and startup ecosystems?

Over my decade in venture, I’ve lived through seasons when it’s trendy to care about diversity and inclusion, and seasons when it’s not. I have been in venture when the #MeToo movement happened and when the George Floyd murder happened. But as an Asian American woman in venture (we only represent 6-7% of the VC population!), it’s more than just a season for me. I care immensely about ensuring that our team can identify many flavors of entrepreneurs, even those who might look or act differently. For example, we need to make sure we’re fully understanding the potential of all opportunities across our desk, even from folks who might be more soft-spoken or come across less confident. We want to make sure that we’re investing in founders who reflect the demographics of the next century and not just pattern match to many of the successful founders of the last century. On the inclusion front, since venture is such a relationship-based industry, it’s all the more important to open doors and lengthen tables. The more people we can include from all walks of life, the more durable our technology products will be, and the stronger our entrepreneurial ecosystem will be!

What’s something about your background or journey that readers may find surprising?

I’m a very proud San Francisco native and Lowell High School alum. My classmates can attest to my quirkiness - I wore orange every day in 8th and 9th grade!

Can you talk about any exciting new projects or initiatives that you're working on, and what impact you hope to make through those efforts?

One of the most exciting projects I’ve been working on, in concert with my colleague Todd Jackson, is the PMF Method. We basically were staring at 20 years of First Round data and believed that there was a way to better codify what “getting to product market fit” means. And so, we put together a long essay to describe that journey and invited folks to apply to a cohort. Our first cohort finished earlier this year - we had ~5000 people apply for 15 spots! - and we’re hosting a PMF Method Retreat in Sonoma in a couple of weeks to run another group through our content. It’s been a fantastic way to share all of the knowledge that we have from getting a front row seat to numerous seed-stage companies, and it’s also been a way for us to engage with founders who might otherwise feel “too early” for First Round because they haven’t left their jobs yet or haven’t landed their first paying customers. And broadly, I think it’s great for our firm’s brand - we want folks to think of First Round when they think about getting to product-market fit.

Who are some stellar API founders and their startups we should look out for?

  • Srikanth Narayan at Cache is building an exchange fund to help people (in bigTech for example) diversity their assets and defer cap gains tax.
  • Rick Song and Charles Yeh at Persona are building an identity verification and risk assessment company.
  • Dana Kim at Highlight is building a next gen in-home product testing platform. It’s a ton of fun trying new CPG products - join as a Highlighter here!
  • Adit Abraham and Raunak Chowdhuri at Reducto recently announced their $8M+ seed to help LLMs read documents the way humans do.
  • Kurtis Lin at Pinwheel is building solutions to help financial institutions accelerate customer activation and grow their LTV.

What advice would you give to aspiring VCs who are looking to break into the industry, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds?

This is a question I get a lot! My advice would be to outwork and out-network everyone else. Though there are far more VC jobs today than a decade ago, there are very few VCs who post jobs on an active job site and run through a traditional hiring process. Find people on LinkedIn, reach out to them (but not on LinkedIn!), and be bold about why you’d be a great fit for the firm. Read everything and stay up-to-date on the latest technology, trends, and news in whatever industries you’re most passionate about. Offer to do meaningful work or research for GPs, share relevant articles or comment on content that they’ve published, and get out there. Find great entrepreneurs and invest in them personally - you don’t have to be a VC to do that! And if you don’t have the cash, invest your time to help them grow! 🚀
