Reaching Out for Kith and Kin...

👩🏫👨 December: for so many faiths and cultures, it's especially a time of family - of sharing, giving, being together...of appreciating what family is all about.

And that includes our ancestors, our patriarchs and matriarchs, our relatives, kith and kin...and the shadowy figures we'd like to know more about.

Including their professions, the wars they were in, the way they worked, lived, loved, and filled their days...

In my own family we've had soldiers, a codebreaker, a conscientious objector, a forestry inspector, a mining engineer, a mechanic, teacher, writer, nurses and doctors...

We've had one doc who tended the 19th-c. Bronte family on the Yorkshire moors- and we've had a taverner who served up the last ale to condemned prisoners, outside the gates of York UK.

Once you have names and dates, you can look through: other databases, newspaper archives, civic records, parish documents, company histories, ships' records - and many library resources. And you may even find family info-treasures in storage.

👩🏫👨 It's somehow ironic and profound that technology is the thing that so often connects us with, and helps us understand, the past. Today there is a wealth of accessible info and potential for connecting with your family history, personal and professional. And maybe there's even a book in it for you!
