Reaching the Tipping point: It’s now or never!
The events that took over headlines in the last one year may have influenced the collective conscience of keeper of this humanity, The United Nations (UN) to choose “Biodiversity” as the theme for this year’s World Environment Day (June 5, 2020).
On this special day, I share my thoughts and commitments to save this planet and species who’ve made it their home. Hope you will join me in this march!
What is biodiversity?
It is the variety of life on Earth, in all its forms and all its interactions. If that sounds bewilderingly broad, that’s because it is. Biodiversity is the most complex feature of our planet and it is the most vital. “Without biodiversity, there is no future for humanity,” says Prof David MacDonald, at Oxford University.
Biodiversity is an appropriate theme amidst the backdrop of alarming facts and headlines from 2019-20.
Alarming facts and headlines from 2019-20
- 2019 turns out to be the warmest year recorded in human history (1.1 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period) with near-record melting of Arctic sea ice.
- India’s wettest monsoon in 25 years kills 1750 people, Dorian the second strongest Atlantic hurricane on record ravages The Bahamas and Typhoon Hagibis: Japan’s second most expensive typhoon in history ($15 billion).
- The bushfire in Australia kills one billion animals and accelerates some endangered species to extinction.
- Amazon deforestation set to hit a record high in 2020 (5606 sq kms) causing Causing 20% of forests to release more carbon than they absorb.
- Coronavirus turns into a global pandemic killing almost 400,000 people, pushing world economies into recession and pushing 40-60 million people into extreme poverty.
- The worst locust attack in decades invades thousands of hectares of crops across Africa, Middle East and Asia pushing communities into famine.
These tragedies are occurring due to human impact on biodiversity and climate change. When will learn from these man-made tragedies?
Our behavior accelerating downfall
Despite Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg warning the world leaders about climate change, the World Economic Forum getting corporate leaders to transition to sustainable business practices and the United Nations observing the “World Environment Day” the humankind continues to act irresponsibly by forgetting that we share this planet with a billion other species.
Biologists say, “One million species of plants and animals are at risk of extinction. At least 571 species were lost since 1750 but likely many more”.
Whilst we may be imparting our intelligence to machines and robots, we’ve not realized our irresponsible actions continue to trigger such calamities and pandemic bringing the world on its knees. What’s the use of ruining this planet filled with nature and beauty and setting out on outer space expedition looking for life in another planet?
What can you do?
While scientists say we have reached the tipping point, it’s still possible to undo the damage we’ve done to this planet that accelerated by industrialization. We must act and create millions of Greta Thunberg’s and get world leaders, corporate heads to follow us. Here is how you can be one.
1. Switch to renewable sources of energy (solar, wind, hydro) – say no to fossil fuels; use carpooling, public transport and bicycles.
2. Stop consuming animals and animal products – Go vegetarian if not vegan!
3. Reduce your carbon footprint (sustainable living) – Be a minimalist!
4. Farm for human need and not greed - say no to urbanization and deforestation!
5. Stop buying 2nd home and instead create forests (Miyawaki) - name trees after your loved ones!
6. Work for an organization that goes beyond human diversity – biodiversity
My commitments
These two books on flora and fauna changed my behavior towards nature and can definitely help you be more environment friendly.
Six-years ago I sold my car and switched to carpooling/public transport. I’ve never consumed animals since birth and the last time I bought leather shoes was 3 years ago. I've always worked for organizations focused of Environment and furthering my commitment towards 3, 4, 5.
While our actions may be a drop in the ocean, but the ocean wouldn't be the same without that drop. Let’s leave a better planet for the next generation and stop romanticizing about settling down in Mars.
Together we can act #ForNature before it becomes too late!
