The Real Problem with Problems: A New Perspective for Business Growth

The Real Problem with Problems: A New Perspective for Business Growth

At a recent event, I noticed something striking: the room was filled with people discussing problems—big ones, small ones, you name it. But what stood out wasn’t the problems themselves; it was the underlying belief many seemed to share: that they shouldn’t have problems in the first place.

And that got me thinking:

The real problem isn’t the problem. The problem is thinking we shouldn’t have them.

When we believe that life or business should be smooth sailing, every bump in the road feels catastrophic. We fall into patterns of avoidance, blame, or frustration. And worst of all, we miss the opportunity—the gift—that problems offer us: a chance to grow.

Problems Are Proof of Goals

Here’s the thing: a problem only exists because you have a goal.

Let’s use a gym analogy. Imagine you want to lift twice your body weight. You step up to the barbell and realize you can’t do it. That’s a problem—but only because you want to lift that weight. Without the goal, there’s no problem.

So what do you do?

  1. Break the challenge into smaller steps.
  2. Build strength over time.
  3. Keep showing up.

Eventually, you’re lifting the weight with ease. The “problem” helped you grow into a stronger version of yourself—physically and mentally.

The same principle applies in business.

The Gift of Problems in Business

Every business problem is an opportunity in disguise:

  • Revenue isn’t where it should be? Time to rethink your strategy and find untapped opportunities.
  • Your team isn’t aligned? That’s a chance to develop your leadership and create clarity.
  • Marketing isn’t resonating? Dive deeper into your audience’s needs and refine your message.

Each problem is a call to action. A call to grow, innovate, and adapt. But we only get the gift if we stop avoiding the problem and start solving it.

Why Facing Problems Sets You Apart

Successful business owners and leaders don’t run from problems—they embrace them. They see challenges not as obstacles but as stepping stones.

This mindset is what separates those who plateau from those who thrive. When you reframe problems as opportunities to level up, you position yourself—and your business—for sustained growth.

How to Shift Your Mindset About Problems

  1. Acknowledge the Problem: Don’t avoid or blame—own it.
  2. Identify the Lesson: What is this challenge trying to teach you? Where is it pushing you to grow?
  3. Take Action: Break the problem down into actionable steps and tackle it head-on.

This isn’t just about business; it’s about life. Whether you’re running a company, managing a team, or pursuing personal growth, problems are inevitable. But how you respond to them will define your success.
