Real Talk About PR (Public Relations)

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions out there about what PR is, what it does, and what a publicist can do for you.

First, I can tell you that we publicists don’t have some magic wand to wave at you and – POOF! – you’re on The Today Show. We can’t sprinkle a little magic dust on you to get you on Oprah. It takes work, time, preparation, and a good story to make those things happen.

So, if you’re willing to do the work and take the time, you’ll get a lot out of this episode, where it’s just me and you talking truth about getting media publicity — where to start, what it takes, who to talk to, and what you can do to help the media help you.

In this solo show, I tell you about: the biggest PR myth, 4 things PR is (and 1 thing it isn’t), how to tell if your story is real news, how the Black community can support Blacks in the media (and vice versa), pro tips for “piggybacking” and your next press release, what social media can’t do for you that only traditional media can, more reasons to be nice to your local journalists … and more!

“PR through traditional media gives you credibility, visibility, and an implied endorsement that social media can’t.” – Pam Perry

Great information! I just graduated from PVAMU College of Business Executive MBA program last month and while I was there I was the Vice President of the PV NABJ Chapter! I am looking forward to joining my local Houston chapter soon! I used to do PR years ago. Now I am looking to do more public speaking, promote my R&B single “Is U In” and my podcast “Diva’s Diamonds by Queen Diva!”
