With the latest Windows 'Deprecated Features' page quietly revealing the end of WMR, Microsoft plans to remove the Mixed Reality Portal app and Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR. The fate of existing VR headsets remains uncertain, with questions about continued functionality and support. Microsoft's decision marks the end of a six-year venture into the VR space. 
  2. Immersive VR goggles for mice unlock new potential for brain science: Northwestern University researchers have developed VR goggles for mice, offering a leap in immersive experiences compared to current systems. The Miniature Rodent Stereo Illumination VR (iMRSIV) provides a 180-degree field-of-view, enhancing neural circuitry studies. Unlike traditional setups, these compact goggles fully immerse mice, eliminating distractions. The system enables simulations of overhead threats, uncovering new insights into mouse behavior and brain activity. Researchers anticipate broader accessibility to neurobiology studies with the cost-effective and user-friendly iMRSIV. Unlike traditional HUDs, this system uses 3D laser scanners and LiDAR data to create a full 3D representation of streets, enabling the display of holographic road obstacles hidden from view. The technology keeps drivers focused on the road, projecting real-time hazards in 3D, improving safety. The team, in collaboration with Google, aims to conduct road tests in 2024.   4. Non-toxic quantum dots pave the way towards CMOS shortwave infrared image sensors for consumer electronics: Researchers from ICFO and Qurv have developed a breakthrough in shortwave infrared (SWIR) image sensor technology using non-toxic colloidal quantum dots. Published in Nature Photonics, their method synthesizes high-quality quantum dots compatible with CMOS technology, overcoming the regulatory challenges of heavy-metal-containing counterparts. The resulting SWIR photodetector boasts a wide spectral range, high dynamic range, and exceptional performance. The team, in collaboration with Qurv, successfully integrated the photodiode into a CMOS-based image sensor, demonstrating a non-toxic, room temperature-operating SWIR quantum dot image sensor with vast applications in automotive, consumer electronics, and beyond. 
  5. Wi-Fi 7 Launches With New Features That Promise Reduced Wireless VR Latency: The Wi-Fi Alliance has officially introduced Wi-Fi 7 Certified products to the market, featuring advancements such as enhanced speed and transmission. Notably, Wi-Fi 7(802.11.be) brings improvements for wireless VR applications, boasting 'near-zero' latency through features like Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and Simultaneous Transmission and Reception (STR). MLO enables devices to connect to multiple bands simultaneously, while STR allows simultaneous data transmission across different bands. This technology could optimize wireless VR experiences, offering deterministic latency for better position prediction. Despite these gains, it's essential to note that Wi-Fi latency is just one component in the overall VR experience, with rendering, encoding, decoding, and device-specific latency still contributing to the overall pipeline.
