Reasons Why Your New Bachelor’s Degree Is Worthless
They are only Engineer's by Degree not by Skills set or knowledge
I see a common misconception that only an engineering or medical degree will fetch you a good job and a promising career, hence parents force their child to take engineering without actually understanding if their child has the interest or attitude to be an engineer. even they are not competent in critical problem solving
They expect a lot from them which results in unwanted pressure on students. which is leading them in wrong way,
As a result most of the students do engineering for the sake of a degree and hence they somehow pass the subjects without actually understanding the relevance or importance of it.
Hence they have nothing relevant to add as a skill sets which can get them a job in their field of study.
University Outdated Curriculum & Faulty Education System
The course contents do not focus on areas which will actually help in the job industry after employment. Which is not up to data at all, there is a huge gap between what the market needs and what Indian education equips its future employees with. Despite exponential changes in science and technology round the world, the syllabus is hardly ever updated, still colleges have the syallabus from 1900's.
The traditional education sector in India has not evolved at the same pace as the industry. The expectations that the companies have from their candidates and the skills that engineering graduates bring in, do not match resulting in a huge gap between what is taught and what industry demands. Hence they are not focusing on the syallabus in depth with industry expectation
Even now students are made to write lots of assignments which only help in developing clerical skills of the students and not engineering or analytical skills.
Very little emphasis is given to onsite projects or internships which can actually make students understand the importance of a particular subject or concepts in engineering and importance is given to research and innovation which is what engineers should do.
The examination pattern followed actually tests mugging capability of students rather than their engineering skills.
State of Engineering Colleges not good
Engineering is seen more as a business by the college management in private institutes. They concentrate more on filling their pockets than actually providing basic infrastructure and facilities.
Even if they make a good and attractive campus, they increase the seats and fee to such an amount that it becomes impossible for students to actually get the required attention or facilities while in college. They are just treated like herd of sheep.
Even in government institutes infrastructure is in a pathetic state, instruments are either not working or broken, not having proper labs and practical exposure, neither faculties are interested in teaching nor students are interested in learning.
As a result of this, more than 80% of engineering students in India fail to match the skill sets required by the industry ( it is more than 95% for R & D or product development organizations) and hence even if hired, they would be more of a liability than an asset to the organization. Even if they somehow get a job, they are placed either in service sector or banking jobs which has no relevance to what was studied in the college, then they sacrifice with their stream and decide to go into different field.
Moreover, companies are prone to visiting only top colleges to recruit potential employees. Thus, resumes from relatively unknown colleges do not get shortlisted, even don't try to have an eye on them.
This not only creates a lack in equal opportunities, but also causes a deficiency of quality employees as this process ignores a huge number of meritorious students who do not study in top tier colleges, but have a good skills set, what they possessed by own self.
Lack of Quality Faculty, Makes big dent
There are more than 30,000 colleges in India granting degrees. There are not enough quality teachers for all of these educational institutes.
After multinational companies, the IT big shots of India, and the smaller engineering companies have had their pick, many from the remaining engineering graduates go on to get a PhD or Master's and join as faculty at engineering institutes. Thus, unlike other parts of the world, the Indian faculty is not comprised of the very best of the industries who have the skills to create brilliant students.
IITs/NITs/BITS do have some very good faculties but even they are very less in numbers.
Most educated engineers join teaching as a profession not because of passion, but because they have to earn a livelihood. The few good professors prefer administrative positions because of lower intellectual demands coupled with higher pay packages.
Lack of Innovation & Research and Problem Solving Skills
Students need to be motivated enough to innovate or think for themselves. The reason we lack innovation in India is because, we don't allow questioning neither do we promote inquisitiveness. If a child asks questions in school, he is either asked to sit down or mocked at.
Students must be given the space and scope to think and innovate, to question and come up with solutions. This applies to both school education and higher education.
Indian students trained right from their primary education to mug up and only getting good grades never learn to question or innovate. Hence that shift from a trained mind to do research and innovation or think 'Out of the Box' is not possible as they neither have the interest nor the patience to do research.
Lack of Skill based Knowledge
Student's need to have real world problem solving skills, skill-based education is another immediate need to land an employment. Engineering students need to have hands-on training on the basis of the problems they are likely to encounter in the real world on industry level.
One of the major problems facing the fresh graduates is their insufficient understanding of basic concepts, even they are not good with foundation knowledge of the engineering subjects. The lack of in-depth understanding of technical information, lack of client-handling skills and insufficient knowledge across domains are the major skill gaps in the area.
While the vast numbers of engineering students in the country study their textbooks, give their exams and collect their degrees, it is only when they encounter the real world problems do they realize their shortfall.
Hence both students and companies have to take extra time in order to skill them hence majority of them suffer unemployment because of this only.
So do internships while in college as it will help you to actually understand the industry requirements of the profile you want to make your career in and prepare yourself accordingly.
Irrespective of the branch you are in, learn at least one programming language as it will not only make you more competent while in college but will also help in getting better employment opportunities. once you'll graduate.
Communication Skills
Lack of the communications skills is also one of major factor of unemployement, even they are good the technical part but not basic communication skills, even the IT sector requires employees who are fluent and well versed in English, as a part of the job, they also have to communicate with international customers. Thus, if the quality of engineering graduates do not improve, IT sector hiring will also go down.
Problems with English language along with issues in basic soft skills make these students ineligible for employment. The difference in English and cognitive skill modules may only be a function of the input quality of the students.Basically the Tier 3 cities are the one with the lowest employability rate. This is because of the insufficient infrastructure for developing skilled specific knowledge.
So to all the graduates who are in search of a job :
- Understand what you actually want to do, if you can do that job for the next 30 years.
- If Yes!!! don't expect much from the organization, join an organization and try to learn what you missed in college and update yourself with skill sets which the industry demands. Have a strong online presence either through LinkedIn or have your own website. Eventually you will improve and then companies will run after you.
- If no, decide what you like and make a plan on how to go about it. It can be movie making, dancing, business or any domain which intrigues you.
- But always remember, you need to work very hard and ensure you are the best in whatever you do.
I would say, Do whatever you love to do
Thanks
