The Recipe = The Proven Process
This weekend my children and I embarked on a home-baking adventure. Boy did we learn a lot! After much discussion about what we should bake, we decided to bake from scratch cupcakes and hold a friendly neighborhood decorating competition.
Once we had the recipes finalized and the ingredients we set up the workspace together then I let them have at it. Each of them had the recipe, the ingredients and the utensils to complete the mission. Trusting that I had set them up for success I went about other kitchen tasks.
All seemed to be going well until they both shrieked, "Mom, it looks like puke!" I turned around, inspected each bowl and agreed that yes, the contents of each bowl did look a little disgusting. "What went wrong?" I asked. "Don't know", they replied.
We turned back to the recipes and after some discussed that they had following the order of the ingredient list and not the recipe instructions. "Aha!" we all exclaimed. What in invaluable learning experience!
Now, before you get too worried, I must chare that we were able to salvage the recipes with a ton of flour and a lot of re-working the recipe. The crowd of children were able to carry on with the competition, all had a great time, and the best part about it was we got to enjoy the delicious rewards from our labor.
This simple activity uncovered a fundamental truth that may companies spend years figuring out. If you want to get the outcomes you expect, you have to not only document the recipe, The Proven Process, you also have to FOLLOW IT!
What is your company's Proven Process? Is it documented in a simple to follow 1-page format with visuals? Is it FOLLOWED BY ALL of your team?
