Recognizing Those Working in the Firefighter Mental Health Space

Recognizing Those Working in the Firefighter Mental Health Space

On October 3-4, 2024, the Fire Service Psychology Association- Admin (FSPA), held its 7th Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. The event was co-sponsored by the DC Fire and EMS Department and the DC Fire and EMS Foundation and the 120+ attendees had the opportunity to hear eleven outstanding presentations from equally outstanding presenters.

One of the highlights from Day #1 was FSPA's recognition of individuals who have made outstanding contributions in helping to "build a bridge between professional psychology and the fire service."

Psychologist of the Year--Dr. Carla Moore, Ph.D

Dr. Moore is a licensed clinical psychologist with the City of Atlanta’s Department of Human Resources Public Safety Division serving fire, law enforcement, and corrections personnel. She was nominated by Roderick Smith, Chief of the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department.

Fire Service Leader of the Year--Fire Captain Christopher Moore

Captain Chris Moore of the Chesapeake (Va.) Fire Department set the FSPA record for most nominations for one of our awards with 27 nominations from individuals that included, but were not limited to, a city councilman, several fire department officers—ranging from fire chiefs to firefighters—psychologists, and other mental health clinicians from across the country, not just his city of Chesapeake, Virginia.

Masters-Level Clinician of the Year--Alison Fienning, MCSW

This is the first year that FSPA has awarded a Masters-Level Clinician of the Year Award (FYI, masters-level clinicians (e.g., CSW, LPC, Marriage and Family Therapists) make up 30% of FSPA's current membership!).

Alison Feinning FSPA's first Masters-Level Clinician of the Year, and her selection was made easy by virtue of being nominated by twelve individuals! The most difficult decision was which of those nominations would be read here today! That nomination came from James Burneka Jr., Retired Wellness Coordinator for the Dayton Ohio Fire Department (Thank you, James!).

Congratulations to Dr. Moore, Captain Moore, and Ms. Alison Fienning on receiving this recognition from FSPA. More importantly, is the recognition they received by virtue of the nominations submitted on their behalf!
