Reduce the excuse

“I have the best of intentions to go and do it, but there always seems to be an excuse that means I don’t.”

A client told me this a week ago. They felt bad that it kept happening. Those excuses kept getting in the way of the healthy action they wanted to take.

This person isn’t alone when it comes to things getting in the way of healthy action. A lot of the busy professionals struggle to follow through on the healthy action they intended. 

Some struggle occasionally, others struggle more often.

“Excuses” pop up all the time that get in the way of action.

Some of them are legitimate - my child has just vomited all over themselves, the carpet, and me.

Most of them are less legitimate - I just want to format that document so it looks a little bit prettier.

It’s obviously a problem when these illegitimate excuses stop us taking healthy action.

BUT you aren’t a moral failure if they do. Don’t feel bad about yourself!

The problem isn’t that you are a terrible person. The problem that I see most is that people aren’t as prepared as they need to be in order to reduce the impact of those excuses.

They haven’t prepared for that healthy action in such a way that it’s almost harder not to do it. 

Every week we spend 6 minutes (like the 6 minute ab videos) planning out our healthy actions for the week.

We line them all up so we can knock them down like dominos when the time comes. Especially if there are illegitimate excuses floating round.

Here are some questions to help you plan so you can reduce the excuse

  • What am I going to do - be really specific?
  • Where am I going to do it?
  • Who am I going to do it with?
  • What gear do I need for it?
  • Who do I need to communicate with so that life can continue on while I’m doing it?
  • How long do I need in order to get it done?
  • Where does it fit into my diary?
  • Do I have a back-up plan? (In cases of vomit)
