Redundancy: A New Chapter, Not the End of the Book
Does it feel like everything you’ve worked for has just vanished?
Redundancy can hit like a punch in the stomach. One moment, you’re in a job you’ve poured all your energy into for years, the next, you’re staring at a crossroads in life, wondering, What now?
Maybe your inner critic is whispering, “No one else will hire me. I’ve only ever worked here. It’s been years since I applied for a job. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”
Sound familiar?
That uncertainty and self-doubt can feel overwhelming. The sinking feeling in your stomach? It’s real and it’s valid.
Yet here’s what you’re forgetting, you’re not starting from scratch. You’re standing on a rock-solid foundation built over years of experience.
You’ve solved problems, developed skills and brought value to your work. That doesn’t disappear just because the role does. Employers want people like you, even if it doesn’t feel that way right now. The trick is learning to see your worth and showing it to the world.
What if redundancy wasn’t the end of the road, but the start of something better? A chance to pivot, grow and maybe even discover a career path that truly lights you up?
Reframing Redundancy
I know how this feels because I’ve walked this path myself. It was coaching that opened my eyes to the opportunities that were now available to me. Through coaching, it’s easier to untangle the mess of self-doubt, rebuild confidence and reconnect to who you truly are.
Here are five tips to help you start turning this challenge into an opportunity.
Acknowledge What You’re Feeling
Redundancy isn’t just a professional blow, it’s also emotional. It’s okay to feel angry, upset or even relieved. It’s all valid. Bottling up your emotions only keeps you stuck. Acknowledge them, then begin to process them. Journaling or talking to someone you trust can be a great release.
When I work with clients, we take time to unpack these emotions because ignoring them doesn’t work. Once you’ve faced how you feel, you can begin to move forward with clarity.
Reframe Your Thinking
The words you use matter. Instead of saying, “I’ve lost my job,” try, “I’ve been given the opportunity to explore something new.” It’s a small shift and it changes the energy.
Together, we’ll look at your unique strengths and achievements. You’ll realise just how much you’ve accomplished and we’ll work to reframe your story in a way that builds confidence.

Reconnect with Who You Are
When was the last time you thought about what truly makes you happy? Beyond the job title and the nine-to-five grind, who are you? What lights you up?
This is a crucial part of my coaching process. I help my clients reconnect with their identity outside of work so they can build a life, not just a career, that feels fulfilling. Start by listing three things you love to do and why they matter to you. You might be surprised by what you discover.
Silence Your Inner Critic
That voice in your head telling you you’re not good enough? It’s lying. Your inner critic isn’t the truth. It’s fear talking. It’s just trying to keep you safe.
Through my Crossroads to Clarity programme, I work with clients to quieten that voice. Using practical techniques like mindfulness and visualisation, we’ll shift your focus from fear to possibility. Start today by recognising your inner critic for what it is and challenging it with facts.
Take Small, Brave Steps
Moving forward doesn’t have to mean leaping straight into job applications. Small steps build momentum. Update your CV, refresh your LinkedIn profile or reach out to a former colleague for a coffee chat. Each step you take, no matter the size, is progress.
When working with my clients, we set clear, achievable goals that align with their vision for the future. You don’t have to have it all figured out right now. You just need to take the next step.
Your Next Chapter Starts Now
Redundancy doesn’t have to define you. It’s a chapter in your story, not the whole book. What comes next is entirely up to you.
You have a choice.
Stay stuck or take the reins and create something better. I’m here to help you do just that.
When you’re ready, let’s chat. Together, we’ll work on rebuilding your confidence, silencing that inner critic and mapping out your next steps. You’re not alone in this. I’ll be by your side, cheering you on every step of the way.
This is your opportunity to write a new chapter. Make it one you’re proud of.

1moI'm going to take a look at your blog post, it looks informative. But what caught my attention was the photo. That is a European sign, not one we have here in the US. I grew up in Germany and learned to drive there. So I know the signs. But I didn't really realize the differences until I saw this photo and it sparked a memory! 😊
