Reflecting on my Experience Taking the Methods of Adult Learning Course
On April 18, 2023, we met as a class in person for the final time this semester. We presented our final projects and our learning projects. I am going to be taking the time to reflect on my overall experience in taking this class.
First, I presented my learning project. My learning project was on DEI training with the Center for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Houston. One of the many things we discussed was transformative learning. Transformative learning is defined as "... a shift of consciousness that dramatically and permanently alters our way of being in the world.” (Morrell and O’Connor 2002, p. xviii)." (Baumgartner, n.d.). By taking the DEI training, I had a transformative experience because I wanted to upskill my cultural competence by gaining the skills and strategies needed to be a diversity agent. By taking the workshops, I learned the skill of honest communication with the strategy of asking questions to lead to a better understanding of someone's identity. Another skill I gained through learning was accountability. Accountability when it comes to holding myself accountable for the mistakes I may make and knowing when to apologize for the mistakes that I have made. Also, holding myself accountable when it comes to not ignoring other people's identities, especially the identities I cannot physically see. Lastly, the skill of advocacy when it comes to being an ally and supporting the causes to bring about fair treatment for everyone.
For example, I presented in my presentation the importance of supporting Dreamer students when it comes to improving the DACA Act to create better support for them. Dreamer students are students who are undocumented in the United States and usually come to America at a young age due to their parents wanting to make a better future for them. So, the reason why Dreamer students need to have the proper resources through the DACA Act is that due to coming to America at a young age, America is the only place they know. Moreover, I presented my final project. My final project was creating this blog. When it came to creating this blog, I did not know exactly what the outcome was going to be. I know that the purpose of this blog was to reflect on what I have been learning in class. Ultimately, I feel as though what came out of this blog was tools and strategies to better approach learning to make it more efficient and effective for yourself and others. For me, by having the learning tools or methods presentations, I learned some tools that I can use professionally and personally such as Loom and Kumospace. With the COVID-19 pandemic changing how organizations, if I was to work for a company that I was in a remote space, I can use Loom to record my presentations and send them to my co-workers or I can create a virtual office in Kumospace and we can still have that feeling of being in an office even though we are in different locations physically. The interesting thing about the presentations was that a lot of the learning tools or methods can be used in a remote setting which shows how society is adapting to the world moving into a remote/hybrid environment by creating multiple different learning tools or methods to choose from.

Overall, I would say that my experience has been transformative. Specifically, when it comes to my learning being self-directed, I learned the valuable skill of accountability. Being that I was the one in control of my learning, I needed to hold myself accountable for making sure that I met the learning objectives that I created for myself. By holding myself accountable, I was able to learn the skills and strategies necessary to be a diversity agent which led me to get an internship where I work as an internal HR intern with a think tank start-up company where the company researches diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives for other companies to use as data.
