1. The lesson on reflection and an exercise…
I’ve long claimed no matter how successful you are, you’ll never feel successful if you don’t reflect.
Reflection is a skill. It’s a tool. It’s powerful in that multi-dimensional sorta way.
True reflection requires time, effort, and discipline, which usually means most people won’t do it.
The great news is a little bit of reflection goes a long way. I do it daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annually. And, NO, it does not require hours.
December is a great time to take stock of all the wonderful moments you’ve had and lessons you’ve learned.
Becoming more conscious of them and interpreting them with the right mindset will benefit you now and in the long run.
I reflect on nine categories when I do my annual reflection.
But, to be clear, this is NOT about looking at where your marriage is or career is or major buckets that tend to consume your life.
Reflection, to me, is about asking yourself the right questions—the ones that hurt your brain a little because they require you to stop whatever you’re doing, think, and, most importantly, interpret what actually happened.
See, here’s the thing. When you're in a present moment, it's impossible to know whether you're experiencing a high or low. That's only seeable when you turn around. But, when you look forward, you have the power to change that moment to whatever you want it to mean.
Today, I thought I’d take a moment, to give you a little peek into my reflection.
This is a mere smidge of the concepts I use and areas I focus on.
If you like what you learn in this message, you can get a full-blown, more-in-depth lesson at my leadership coaching session tomorrow at 11 AM CST!
Try these 5 quick reflections.
1. On moments…
Our lives are made of moments. The problem is most people spend their entire life avoiding the present moment. I often joke people live perpetually in a different time zone than the one they’re standing in.
It’s important you experience the present moment while you’re going through it. And, if you want to understand and appreciate the value of any moment you’ve lived, you need to reflect on it.
Pick your moments. Reflect.
2. On accomplishments…
Most people wade through life never bothering to interpret their major challenges, let alone the minor, daily ones that continually present opportunities for growth and greatness.
This, of course, requires consciousness and a willingness to assess whether those challenges were self-imposed or universe-imposed. Either way, becoming aware of this is the first step before we can ultimately learn the lessons these challenges—that ultimately lead to our accomplishments—taught us.

3. On lessons…
Just because we lived a moment doesn’t mean we learned from the moment. I often say, “Our experience is not what happens to us, but the meaning we attach to what happens to us!”
You ought to be getting the hang of this by now. :)
What lessons did you take away from the moments?
4. On personal growth…
Know anything about yourself now you didn’t already know in the beginning of the year?
Caution: If your answer to this question is “No,” you need a serious reboot on how you live your life!
5. On more or less…
We become great in our lives by doubling down on our strengths. Sure, improving those “weaknesses” helps. But, if you want to go far, rely on your bread-and-butter skills and loves.
Conversely, when you strip away the excess, you’re essentially left with the stellar stuff. Oftentimes, the beautiful and strong is dragged down by the meaningless and unnecessary.
Think about what you need more and less of.
