Reflections on 2024: Finding Light Amidst the Chaos

As 2024 draws to a close, I reflect not just on my journey but on the whirlwind that has been this year for the world. The challenges we faced collectively—economic, environmental, societal—have been staggering. Yet, as a thinker, philosopher, researcher, and endlessly curious human being, I cannot help but look for meaning amidst the chaos.

This search for meaning can be both a blessing and a burden, often costly in emotional terms. But I take inspiration from Viktor Frankl, who, even in the unimaginable horrors of Auschwitz, found hope and positivity. Who am I to despair if he could discover light in such darkness?

The truth is, humanity hasn’t fundamentally changed. The years roll on, technology advances, but human nature remains. And yet, amidst the sameness, there are glimmers of hope, resilience, and beauty that remind me of one thing I often tell myself: Life is good. It comes with storms and sunshine, and it’s all part of the grand plan.

This year brought its share of storms but also profound personal growth and joy. One of the most transformative changes for me was a shift in my career path, dedicating myself fully to teaching and learning. It’s a decision that has filled me with purpose and opened my eyes to lessons I didn’t anticipate.

Despite the wear and tear of life—and yes, even when my bones ache—I’m proud to say that I continue to practice yoga. It’s a source of strength, healing, and inspiration not only for myself but for others. For me, yoga is more than a practice; it’s a purpose. Some people find their purpose in life, while others may not, and that’s perfectly fine. But for me, there is no other way.

Here’s what I’ve learned: you don’t need to justify your path to anyone. Embrace it fully, unapologetically, and keep grinding without explanation. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, not those who dim your light. Escape their darkness—you deserve more.

I’ll say something that might sound controversial, but I won’t apologise for it: I have faith in God, and I am a proud Greek Orthodox. My faith is an integral part of who I am, guiding me through life’s ups and downs and giving me hope even in the darkest moments.

Here are the four most important lessons 2024 taught me:

  1. Everyone is fighting a battle you cannot see. Empathy is everything. Even when people seem difficult, remember that their struggles may be invisible to you. A little compassion can make a world of difference.
  2. Don’t fear change—it’s worth the price. Change is inevitable, and yes, it can be costly. But I would rather regret a mistake than regret a missed opportunity. Growth lies on the other side of discomfort.
  3. It could always be worse. This perspective came to me during an interview with a NASA scientist, one of my favorite moments this year. No matter how challenging life feels, there’s always something to be grateful for. Gratitude changes everything.
  4. Everything starts from within. I know it sounds like a cliché, but this truth hit me hard this year. Facing my fears and embracing my uniqueness has been liberating. Don’t downgrade yourself to fit in or suppress your ambition to please others. If you’re proud of the person you see in the mirror each morning, you’re on the right track.

To those who, like me, feel “different,” know this: being different isn’t a choice; it’s a gift. Yes, it comes with a price, but it also comes with unparalleled strength and purpose. Enough of trying to blend in—stand tall in your authenticity.

As we step into 2025, let us embrace the storms and the sunshine with equal gratitude. Let us continue learning, growing, and striving to be lights in the darkness. After all, the world needs people who dare to be different, who dare to hope, and who dare to believe that life, with all its imperfections, is still beautiful.

Merry Christmas to all. May you enjoy every moment, cherish the people you love, and find light in the year ahead.

Thank you
