Reflections on AI advances

During the last months, I've been working in a quite unfamiliar environment: Slovakia. I love travel and, as you can imagine, I had a great time working there. However, there was an obvious barrier that I had to face everyday afterwork: the language.

The Slovakian language, together with its brother the Czech, it's quite unique on its own. Therefore, even communication on a basic level was a daily challenge for me. During these days, I’ve tried the most common language tools available with little success: the translation process was quite slow and suboptimal. Until I tried ChatGPT. I was so surprised to see how fast and accurate ChatGPT translates any text, specially after combining it with photo-to-text apps; it really changed the experience I had so far.

This is just a very brief and basic example on how AI can help us every day. However, it’s also an example of how powerful this tool can be. I’m looking forward to see what scientific breakthroughs will be achieved thanks to its use in the incoming years. On the other hand, a question suddenly pop-up in my mind. I wonder if, thanks to AI, there will be a time in the future when “learning as we know it” will be a thing of the past.
