Reflections on AI: Socrates, Character, and the Mirror of Modern Technology.
GenAI is so good that its values and character traits start to shine through.
It would have been better if we understood AI as another intelligence, as there is nothing artificial about it, but it is true that the way it arrives at its answers – is different. We don’t think about cars as artificial transportation, while horses are the real thing, do we?
Functionally, for us, AI is a tool that can help crank a piece of e-mail out. But, if it is a tool – first and foremost, it’s a mirror of our collective knowledge, high and low. And, as a mirror it reflects our culture onto us. The fact is that we may barely recognise ourselves in the reflection. And this should get us thinking.
Every response reflects what the best of us, or even all of us, could come up with. What do we think about the humanity that sneaks out of this mirror? AI pokes its counteragent, that is, us: what kind of a being are you? Already today, we are beyond the Turing test. It is not us testing the machine, it is the machine helping us to examine ourselves.
Does it sound too abstract? It may indeed be today, but it may not be too long. The more exam benchmarks AI beats, the more it trivialises memorisation, common knowledge, and accepted heuristics. The more it solves reasoning, the closer it gets to translating conclusions into actions with Agentic AI. The more AI solves reasoning, the clearer it will get that only some things are deductible or ‘inductible’. But the more it excels at it, the more questions of the values it exposes in the process and the character it shows become important. Now, along comes Socrates. First the philosopher, then AI.
The main question for Socrates revolved around living a good life, which he believed was achieved through continuous self-examination and the pursuit of virtue. For Socrates, "the unexamined life is not worth living," emphasising the importance of self-reflection and philosophical inquiry as the foundation of a meaningful and virtuous life
Socrates believed, and what made him special in this pursuit, that he didn’t know the answers, even if versions of those were ( and still are ) plenty. Others were more focused on choosing one position and reverse engineering proof that their chosen answer was the right position. What do we do more often: engage genAI to help us with proof of what we think or use the same power to critique ourselves? Dialogue after dialogue, Socrates would drive people crazy by showing how shallow those proofs were. This refusal to simplify, to evade questions of value, forms the foundations of Western civilization. Assuming we resolve hallucinations, can we build AI that will stop short of giving those easy answers?
The latest Anthropic release of Claud took considerations of character into account.
Sonnet does a hack at a character exposed by AI
On the 20th of June, Anthropic launched (Anthropic Sonnet, 2024) the new version of its Claude AI, codenamed Sonnet. It is an intermediary version between Haiku and Opus. The company positions Sonnet as the best “performance and speed” combination. Based on eight metrics compared in the press release, the new version is ahead of its competition in most metrics. The team especially succeeded in pushing the envelope on vision benchmarks; here, Claude is ahead on four metrics out of five. Sonnet also introduces artefacts as a preview feature to enable team productivity. Safety is prominently on the agenda; the company involved the UK AI safety agency in the review.
As part of the release, Anthropic also published a white paper (Anthropic Character, 2024) outlining its team’s thinking on the importance of training its models for character. Up to this point, the key character trait we expected from models is to be “harmless.” Anthropic is on a path to expand that definition towards more traits we find “genuinely admirable” in other people. “We think about those who are curious about the world, who strive to tell the truth without being unkind, and who are able to see many sides of an issue without becoming overconfident or overly cautious in their views. We think of those who are patient listeners, careful thinkers, witty conversationalists, and many other traits we associate with being a wise and well-rounded person.”
The idea of embedding models with a character opens a new set of features to look for in upcoming models. This is the moment when AI really turns the mirror back on us. What do we understand about character? How do we define character traits, and how do we think we build those in ourselves? How do we train AI for character?
The questions of character are indeed complex (meandering). Does it make sense to talk of character traits in how AI models interact with us or, more precisely, in what meta-traits they show in approaching the resolution?
Character may be the next frontier of qualities that AI systems can learn. This is going to be increasingly important as AI systems approach mastery of entry and professional tests. AI model development speed increases the buy-in to the notion of the Singularity that Ray Kurzweil among others introduced ( Kurzweil, 2005) two decades ago and pushed a couple of notches up this year (Kurzweil, 2024). The trend puts us within shooting distance of getting the technicalities of fact-checking, deducting, and inducting right. In this theory, the ideal thinking machines are coming to our phones if they are not already there. If this happens, the magic will disappear as answers to a class of questions, aka “what is the thing”, will become trivial. With this foundational insight, a set of different, possibly more interesting and important questions is peering at us from around the corner.
These are questions of a different magnitude of complexity, questions of the sort “of what is the right thing.” They arise when something cannot be answered just through facts. These are also not just questions about the world; more importantly, these are questions about our stance in the face of experience.
If we anthropomorphise those traits, which we can now talk of algorithmically, we are talking about character.
The approach suggested by Anthropic anticipates several very deep complexities that the introduction of AI will have on the discourse. AI may not be a friend, but it can easily become the best advisor. It can multiply your thinking through the wisdom of humanity. It can also confront you in a way nobody else can. It can be always on your side, but it will always check your fact base for you.
Socratize AI
Socrates was executed in 399 BC by his fellow Athenians for corrupting the youth. There are many ways to think about this moment in history. Two key moments seem relevant in the context of character as it could be implemented by AI. Socrates essentially refused to give definitive answers to questions that required a moral stance. He taught his disciples to trace their thoughts to foundations and openly recognize when questions could not be logically resolved, deducted or inducted.
One of the things that makes this event so enduring is that, from what we can tell, Socrates could have fled. Essentially, it means that there is only one world we can inhabit: the world that we build. If we are not ready to die for it – there is no world.
The perceived ability of new technology, new ideas and perspectives to corrupt the youth and public in general were cornerstones of some of the major turns in history. The printing press, the internet were all feared to bring in “corruption.” The struggles of modern societies to connect parallel realities of different groups is of that same nature.
The Socratic approach teaches us that the starting point is always to lose confidence in self-righteousness. You must critically revisit the facts and logic that lead you to take positions. And above all else, you must embody the values you believe in. In Socrates case and hopefully not in ours, all the way to death.
Thanks to Socrates for more than two and a half millennia, if not always, but at least often societies recognize that pinning one truth is difficult, that the realities that people inhabit remain different, and that the search for truth is endless. The more people are involved in the search, the faster we will get there.

Know thyself
The Socratic roadmap is an important hint at how we should look at development of technology. Whenever there is an interplay of society and technology, it helps to be very clear where this interplay reflects us, even if we blame it on technology.
There are many ways we’ve tried to conceptualise this interplay. Thomas Kuhn (Kuhn, 2012) suggested a structure for scientific revolutions. Clayton Christenson (Christensen, 2016) took a hack at the same question, looking at the innovator’s dilemma. Gartner (Gartner, 2024) suggest four stages: innovation trigger, the peak of inflated expectations, a trough of disillusionment, and the slope of enlightenment. These and other approaches do their best to put a framework, conceptualise, and rationalise what happens when technology meshes with societies and individuals. This attempt is often seen as tech positivistic.
We focus on different aspects of the lifecycle at different times. With so much technology at our fingertips and so many new institutions working hard to introduce and profit from new tech, a new phase may be important: a blame phase.
The blame phase, this is when we blame the outcomes of our usage of technology, electrons and bytes, not the values we expose in approaching it. A good recent example is Jonathan Haidt’s new book “The Anxious Generation” (Haidt, 2024).
I do support the proposition that often, the changes that technology introduces are somewhat hard to reverse. Social networks flood children with short messages, produce anxiety and discourage them from long-form reading. A return to books will take time, and the new generation will seek proof that reading more books is a better way of communicating with the world and learning about it. The BookTok community, with hundreds of thousands of followers, shows that the process is well on the way (Izea, 2023).
But at the end of the day, the only way to deal with those impacts is through a reinterpretation and return to values, through translation of those values into habits in pursuit of worthy goals. In that sense, we didn’t change too much in the last two and half millennia.
There is always a point when we realise that technology has changed something, and we cannot change it back. This is the moment when technology, first and foremost, plays a mirror on us. If something has to change, it is ourselves.
Personally, the most interesting “use case” for GenAI is to help explain the most cryptic texts. Poetry, philosophy, math. With GenAI at the fingertips, anybody can now appreciate Ulysses. It still means decrypting every sentence, but it is way easier and more fun than it was before. It is not as difficult anymore. At the end of the day, it describes only one day in modern-day Ulysses’ life. Another nod to the ancients, this time the Romans.

4moMax - a very thought provoking article and one that has raised many questions in my mind. I expect that many other questions will remain unquestioned. I think the do no harm principle should apply but that does sometimes / many times mean do no harm in one place and do harm in another - and who defines or what is harm. I need to go and have a lay down now to cogitate.
