Reflections on a Hiking Trail
What did the hiking boots say to the backpack? I’m sole-mate material!
I took time to myself (something I don't do enough of) and decided to hike through the beautiful landscapes of Yanchep National Park. Hiking is a great activity. It offers more than just a physical journey—it provides an opportunity for reflection and insight. As I was walking through the winding trails, I was reminded of the importance of self-care (without my wife, Mel, prompting me this time!), pausing to take in the sights and listen to the sounds of nature, and allowing myself to just be. This in turn allowed me to tune in, calm my thoughts and to think things through clearly, without unnecessary noise. This process, not uniquely, mirrors our professional lives, where taking care of our mental and physical well-being is crucial for sustained success.
In business, clarity is essential. The pathways we choose in our careers, whether they are new ventures, leadership decisions, or strategic shifts, often seem uncertain. But just like on a hike, once we commit to a path, the key is to embrace it fully. Indecision or hesitance can lead to unnecessary detours. When a decision is made, committing to it with confidence allows for the energy to be focused on achieving the goal, rather than second-guessing the route.

Self-care, in this context, isn’t just about personal wellness but also about creating space for reflection within business. Taking time to assess the direction of your team, company, or personal career can offer the same clarity as a peaceful hike. When we pause to reflect, we often see that the path ahead—though challenging—offers opportunities for growth and success if we remain committed and flexible in our approach.
Just as each step taken on a trail gets you closer to your destination, each decision made in business moves you forward. Embrace the journey, care for yourself along the way, and stay committed to the direction you choose. The rewards will come not just from reaching the end, but from the growth experienced throughout the process.
