Reforming Medicare Physician Payment to Support Personalized, Comprehensive Patient Care
Primary care is essential to a healthy population and a high-performing health system. For many it represents an entryway into the broader health care system. Unfortunately, the way we pay for health care in the U.S. – with fee-for-service reimbursement – often leads to fragmented, low-quality, and high-cost care. Additionally, our primary care system is underfunded while we overpay for certain procedures and types of specialty care.
We at Arnold Ventures have long been supportive of payment reforms to shift away from fee-for-service and strengthen primary care, and we were pleased to see the Senate Finance Committee hold a hearing earlier this month on reforming Medicare physician payment to better support personalized, comprehensive care for patients.
With more than 34 million individuals enrolled in traditional Medicare, reforms to physician payment will play an important role in managing population health and constraining overall costs. Here are some key points:
