Refresh, Reflect, Rebalance: The Power of R&R in Times of Change

Moving into a new season can be a good time for some R & R. Yes, rest and relaxation are always important to prioritize. But, today I'm talking about Reflection & Reevaluation - taking time to reflect on your goals and reevaluating your competing priorities.

Decision-making is difficult for many of us, so why would I suggest revisiting decisions we've already made? The answer: life happens, things change.

You've heard the expression, "That's the way I've always done it." Well, you may be at a fork in the road and not realize it. Taking time for R & R allows you to travel down the road you determine is the best path for this particular season.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of R & R

Reflect on the following:

  • Your schedule
  • Your office layout
  • Your files – both paper & electronic
  • Your projects
  • Your task and time management systems

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What has changed since _______ was put into effect?
  • Are the things you use most often, nearby?
  • Is this file/folder/book necessary?
  • Where am I spending the bulk of my time?
  • Where should I be spending the bulk of my time?
  • Is this still the best way?

Avoid these pitfalls:

  • Trying to operate on auto pilot…simply doing what you’ve always done
  • Striving to achieve goals that are no longer relevant to current priorities
  • Neglecting to set goals in the first place

Many people avoid setting goals because of the fear that too many things will change. Take some needed R & R, and you can be free to set goals while allowing yourself to change course as circumstances warrant.
