The Reinvention of Democracy for the Third Millennium
The global commons are under threat in the new millennium, we all know that. Our seas are filled with plastic waste and our air is polluted with greenhouse gases. The ice caps are melting and the forests are being cleared at an alarming rate. The challenges we face are greater than ever before.
We must recognize that these global challenges are not limited to national boundaries. They require collective action and cooperation from all nations. The fate of our planet is at stake and we must act now before it is too late.
The problems we face are complex and multifaceted. They require a comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of these challenges. We must invest in renewable energy and sustainable agriculture. We must promote conservation and protect our biodiversity. We must work together to combat climate change and reduce our carbon footprint.
But this is not just the responsibility of governments. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us. We must take individual action to reduce our consumption and waste. We must make choices that prioritize sustainability over convenience.
The challenges we face are daunting, but we must not lose hope. We have the power to make a difference. We must work together as a global community to protect our planet and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

In the words of the great philosopher Aristotle, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts." Let us remember this as we face the global challenges of the new millennium. Together, we can make a difference.
And here comes the need to reinvent democracy, to craft new tools for us to feel and act as global citizens- at least when global commons are at stake - and to design institutions and legal orders that we can perceive as legitimate and accountable.
We, at Università del Salento, host every year a conference called Supranational Democracy Dialogue and this is our mission.
Year after year we realize how many people care: scholars from whatever scientific field, activists, and officials from international organizations willing to share best practices. The network grows step by step, one edition after the other.
