Research invitation Worcester/Birmingham area

My name is Claudia Calin and I’m a BSc Counselling Psychology student in my final year of study at the University of Worcester.

I am currently involved in the Junior Researcher Programme (JRP) 2015-2016, a scheme conducted in partnership with Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Following a training and induction, I have become a member of a research group supervised by Dr. van den Berg from Radboud University (Netherlands). We are a group of six Psychology students, from five European countries. Our team aims to investigate a topic of great importance, yet one that is under-researched: the invisible hand of the teacher. In the past months, we planned and designed a study entitled: Examining the Influence of the Teachers’ Emotional Support on Students’ Social Inclusion Using the Reciprocal One-With-Many Design.

Teachers’ emotional support has a great impact on students’ social skills, academic achievement and results in fewer negative outcomes, e.g. aggression. The purpose of our project is to examine its influence on students’ social inclusion by taking into account both yours and your students’ perspectives. Thus our study wants to find out whether your students’ view on the emotional support you provide corresponds with your view. This correspondence has great potential to provide insight into your students’ social well-being. Our findings can inform your teaching practice on matters regarding the overall classroom climate. Additionally, publishing of our findings will help improve school interventions and teacher training programmes.

Invitation

You may be eligible for this study if you are a primary school teacher who teaches a class of 9-10 year olds. Data will be gathered in the classroom, using paper questionnaires for students and online questionnaires for teachers.

Benefits of taking part in the study

We are happy to provide a report about the social well-being of students, the relationships among them, as well as the general classroom climate. The data we are aiming to collect will thus contain important information about your classroom, which can be used to better understand classroom dynamics. In addition, you will contribute to a large cross-cultural study. By conducting this study, we can learn more about the importance of teacher’s social support for children’s well-being across Europe.

Should you be interested in taking part or know anyone who might be willing to help us with this, please get in touch! I'm happy to provide more detailed information so don't hesitate to contact me.
