The Resume Mistake You're Making If You're 40, 50, Or 60+
In years with fewer job search competitors, you could afford to make many mistakes, and it would still be easy to find a good job.
However, in 2024, current job search competition is at the highest level in a decade, according to Gallup data published yesterday. There are 10.4 times more job seekers than jobs, plus hiring that's been in a lull (other than health care practitioners and hospitality jobs). Even in a soft landing, there are hiring slowdowns and layoffs.
In this environment of high job search competition, when you're age 40+, making mistakes stalls your search and causes you to lose opportunities.
And almost all job seekers in their 40's, 50's and 60's+ make this dumb mistake.
You and almost all of your age 40+ competitors make the same error, because it's been taught by most career coaches, authors, outplacement firms, and used by resume writers for most age 40, 50 and 60+ job seekers (because it's taught to those job search resources in their certification training).
You've been given false reasons to include this mistake into your resume - You've been told if you fail to do this, Applicant Tracking Systems will screen you out because of your age.
What's this mistake?
Excluding information to try and hide your age ... most candidates over 40 do this, but it almost always hurts and almost never helps your job search.
HR leaders, because it's a primary part of their job to avoid HR lawsuits (like age discrimination), don't allow their recruiters to screen candidates based on dates. This is a search on a database of resumes, so database logs store digital evidence of searches conducted. Searching based on dates is evidence of age discrimination - exactly what the HR department is supposed to prevent (and can get HR executives fired).
But resumes that hide information can be screened out by recruiters, can be easily seen in visual resume screening, and present a false perception that you won't be able to support face-to-face (or on Zoom).
Your best case scenario has a high likelihood of setting you up for failure, because you can't win a job when an employer realizes you hid your age (what else are you hiding)?
This might have been overlooked when there were shortages of candidates. In 2024, there's an excess of candidates and a shortage of jobs, so employers don't have to overlook candidates who present themselves deceptively.
And it's not just dates, it's your early career also. Guess who else hides chunks of time from employers ... people with bad things to hide (Like ex-cons and people who have committed theft or fraud). Do you really want your resume to give the impression to employers of "What else are you hiding? And why are you hiding it?"
So why are you excluding dates and early career on your resume?
It's what you've been taught, but it's bad advice.
Fortunately, there are far more effective ways to overcome employment age bias than deceit. Why not let me give you some great advice, so you can beat ageism and accelerate your job search?
Why not let me show you more about proving you can solve the individual hiring manager's current problems and proving your success?
