Revere news - Introducing the Cairngorms Peatland Restoration Project

As 2024 draws to a close, we celebrate our third year of Revere, progressing our mission to scale nature-based solutions in UK National Parks and beyond. Through working with local partners, we’ve grown our pipeline to more than 40 projects at varying stages of development. With full investment, the pipeline will deliver 42,000 hectares of nature restoration, with many of the projects offering peatland and woodland carbon credits with co-benefits for biodiversity, water quality, local communities and livelihoods.

In this newsletter, we feature our investment-ready Cairngorms Peatland Restoration Project and a new ‘Biodiversity in Action’ report, in which our work in the Lake District National Park is profiled. Revere Co-Director, Andrew Sutherland, shares his reflections on COP29 and we report from the recent Nature Finance UK Conference, where Head of Nature-based Solutions, Holly Story, spoke. We also wish the National Parks a very Happy 75th Anniversary. Their importance to our national identity, wellbeing and environment is even greater as we look to the next 75 years.

Wishing you a happy and peaceful festive period.

PROJECT PROFILE: Cairngorms Peatland Restoration Project

Scotland's peat soils cover more than 20% of the country and store around 1.6 billion tonnes of carbon. But, it is estimated that over 80% of these peatlands are degraded and emitting huge quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In fact, 3.5% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas footprint comes from degraded peatland. Our Cairngorms Peatland Restoration Project is undertaking essential work to address this.

The 700 hectare project is located in the heart of the majestic Cairngorms National Park in Scotland. Not only is the project restoring peatland to provide a vital climate solution; it is enhancing natural habitats conserving wildlife species such as golden plover, red grouse, meadow pipit, and curlew. Peatland Carbon Credits, as Pending Issuance Units (PIUs), are available for purchase.

COP29 in Baku

COP29 reflections

COP29 may not have been everything it was hoped it could be, but some significant agreements were reached that could have far-reaching outcomes. Andrew Sutherland, Co-Director of Revere and Global Head of Natural Capital at Palladium, shares his reflections.

"As we look back at COP29 in Baku, let’s consider two major wins – 1) the UK’s ambitious new NDC, pledging to reduce carbon emissions by 81% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels, up from 68% by 2030; and 2) the Parties quick agreement on standards for a global carbon market under Article 6.4. Establishing a trusted voluntary carbon market could be a game-changer for unlocking private finance for carbon projects and cutting international greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving the UK target will require a full shift over to green energy and nature-based solutions."

"Both these announcements send a strong signal to the market, highlighting the growing opportunities to invest in climate-positive solutions. But with 2030 climate and sustainability targets fast approaching, unlocking climate finance solutions is more urgent than ever.”

Andrew adds “Here at Revere, we want to play our part in the response. We are offering investors and companies ‘shovel ready’ nature-based solutions at scale in the UK right now, delivering vital peatland restoration and woodland creation. The UK is one of the world's most nature-depleted countries in the world, in the bottom 10% globally. The need for bold and brave action is now."

Revere at the Nature Finance UK Conference 2025

The Nature Finance UK Conference is the annual event for UK natural capital investment and nature-based solutions.  It took place on 5th November in central London, bringing together over 400 professionals. The Revere team was delighted to be there sponsoring, speaking and helping to catalyse the UK market for the third year running. Our very own Holly Story, Head of Nature-based Solutions at National Parks Partnerships, joined fellow experts to explore the opportunities and challenges in linking rural land managers with private finance.

“We are excellently positioned to deliver high integrity, privately financed nature projects that make strategic sense at a landscape level and bring value to farmers, land managers, and communities. In an uncertain world, we are developing projects that work with existing land managers to strengthen rather than threaten their livelihoods. At Revere we are a team of dedicated experts ready to help businesses find practical and transformative projects that truly make a difference.” said Holly.

NATIONAL PARKS PROFILE 75th Anniversary of the National Parks

The Yorkshire Dales National Park recently marked the 75th Anniversary of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act at Malham Youth Hostel, where John Dower’s ground-breaking vision for National Parks was born.

His 1945 report paved the way for the creation of protected landscapes, including the Yorkshire Dales National Park, established 70 years ago. The event included a special blue plaque unveiling and reflections on the Dowers' lasting legacy.

Revere celebrates our fifteen iconic National Parks - here's to 75 more years of access to nature and protecting and restoring our special landscapes for all.
