Riding the Waves of Change: How’s Your Leadership Holding Up?

Riding the Waves of Change: How’s Your Leadership Holding Up?

As we move into 2025, are you feeling energised and enthused or are you running on empty?

Let’s be real – change isn’t just coming, it’s already here.  If you’re like most senior tech leaders, 2024 might have felt like the ground was shifting beneath your feet. One minute, you’re on top of everything, and the next, you’re dealing with company shakeups, new policy rollouts, or a complete reorganisation that’s turning your team upside down. What do you want 2025 to feel like?

Are you sick and tired of ….

  • Feeling overwhelmed by changes you didn’t ask for?
  • Finding it hard to get your voice heard in big decisions?
  • Ready for the next big role, but not sure how to step into it with confidence?

If you nodded at any of these, you’re in good company. A lot of tech leaders are riding the same rollercoaster. They’re experts in their fields but feeling stuck, unsure how to steer through the noise or make the leap into a higher leadership role.

Or do you want your 2025 to feel more like Colin’s story?

Failing Forward: Colin’s Story

When I first met Colin, he’d just missed out on a promotion and was feeling demoralised and unappreciated. Fortunately, his company believed he could rise to the challenge and decided leadership coaching might help him to fill in some of the gaps. They brought me in to work with Colin and he embraced the opportunity, bringing his biggest challenges to the coaching conversations and implementing the strategies we discussed with velocity.

Not only did he soon regain his confidence and start to thrive as a leader within that organisation, but within a matter of months, he secured a more senior position with another business, where he has continued to grow and now holds a global role.

Your Leadership, Your Power: It’s All in How You Show Up

When everything around you feels out of control, it’s easy to blame the situation or get caught up in trying to fix what’s “out there”. But here’s the thing – real leadership starts with how you show up in the moment. It’s not just what you do; it’s who you’re being. The way you handle change, how you relate to your team, how you respond to pressure – it all comes down to key ways of being like responsibility, resilience, integrity, authenticity, assertiveness and confidence.

1.      Take responsibility. When you fully embrace your ability to respond, you stop seeing yourself as a passenger in your own career, and you start steering the ship.

2.      Stop reacting - Instead of reacting to the changes around you, start to own your personal power and your ability to impact your situation. This is where the magic happens - when you move from feeling like things are happening to you, to powerfully responding and making things happen because of you.

3.      Build your resilience. Resilience isn’t just bouncing back – it’s bouncing back stronger, with more clarity and focus than before. In tech, things move fast, and let’s face it, not everything goes the way we want. According to the World Economic Forum’s latest Future of Jobs Survey, resilience is one of the Top 10 skills workers need to develop in order to succeed in today’s fast-changing environment. The question isn’t if you’ll face setbacks, but how quickly you’ll get back up when you do.

Being Bold: The Power of Assertiveness and Confidence

Let’s talk assertiveness. I don’t mean being pushy or bossy. Assertiveness is about having the guts to stand firm when things get messy, and speaking up even when it’s uncomfortable. Leaders who are assertive don’t fade into the background – they help shape what’s next. They drive the conversation instead of waiting for permission.

If you’re looking to get ahead – maybe you’re eyeing a C-suite role – know that getting there isn’t just about being the smartest person in the room or the best with tech. It’s about confidence – real, grounded confidence that comes from knowing who you are as a leader and showing up like you belong in the room.

Confidence doesn’t come from ticking off achievements on your resume. It comes from aligning your actions with your core values and being unapologetically authentic in how you lead. When you can do that, you don’t just walk into a room – you own it.

That’s what we focus on in coaching. We work on the things that build real confidence: knowing your strengths, refining your communication and sharpening your leadership presence. When you’re clear on who you are being as a leader, stepping up to bigger roles just feels like the next natural step.
