Decluttering is rarely (never!) a one-time event. Repeat as often as necessary. Keep the stress as low as you can by doing so.

Rinse and Repeat

Although the phrase, “Rinse and repeat” was conjured up by a fictional shampoo marketer as a way of doubling sales, it’s now used colloquially anytime we need to remind ourselves to keep doing something over and over as needed. Decluttering is one of those times "rinse and repeat" is needed. Note: If you have one and only one drawer that is a little over-stuffed and once it's straightened out, there's nothing else to be done, then ignore the rest of this article. However, for everyone else, I imagine that you can identify with some version of the following:

  • you have a whole desk that needs de-cluttering;
  • you have an entire office that has gotten out of hand;
  • your kitchen pantry cannot be entered except in full protective gear (including steel-toed boots) due to falling cans and boxes whenever anything is moved;
  • your garage is a cause of stress in your household because no one can park a car in there or find anything now “stored” in the garage (and in fact, you loathe even going in there); 
  • the department where you work has a “storage room” that has become a junk room. With budget cuts, you need to make sure every spare pencil, every ream of paper, and every box of rubber bands is used before ordering any more. You have a sneaking suspicion there are actually supplies “stored” in the storage room so you need to get it squared away.

Very few of us have only one tiny area that needs de-cluttering (and that we will de-stress over once it’s done). That is why “rinse and repeat” is the final tip in this series for you. You need to cycle through the de-cluttering process many (many!) times until you have removed all the detritus, the unused, unloved, unneeded items from your space. It may take a few days to do this, or it may take months. It could also take years. However long it takes you, it is worth the effort. 

Remember, your goal is peaceful, predictable productivity. By decreasing your clutter, you can decrease your stress and move closer to your positive place of being energized by your work and home instead of dragged down by the stress.
