RJC Connections: October 2024
Welcome to the October edition of RJC Connections! We celebrate industry achievements and explore creative strategies for enhancing sustainability by focusing on the potential within our existing buildings. We also provide insights into effective solutions for a common challenge: managing the deterioration of below-grade parking garages.
RJC Shines on the Global Stage at CTBUH 2024 Conference
RJC's Kevin MacLean and Phillip Quach represented RJC at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) 2024 International Conference in London, England. The event brought together global experts to discuss innovations in tall buildings, urban development, and sustainable city planning. We're thrilled that several RJC projects were recognized among the world’s best, including M City 1 & 2, CIBC SQUARE, 8 Spadina at The Well, and Concord CityPlace.
RJC Associate Named Top 40 Under 40 in Canadian Construction
We are thrilled to announce that Mohammad Fakoor, an Associate at our Vancouver office, has been recognized by SiteNews as one of the top 40 under 40 in Canadian Construction for 2024. An expert in building performance, decarbonization and energy efficiency, he excels in integrating advanced carbon reduction techniques and mass-timber designs. Congrats Mohammad!
Heritage Home Retrofit Sets New Sustainability Standard
A 1908 Vancouver heritage home is being retrofitted to net-zero standards, setting a new benchmark for sustainable construction. Terry Bergen, Managing Principal at RJC Victoria, highlights the importance of extending the life of existing buildings to reduce embodied carbon. He explores how preserving these structures has a significantly lower environmental impact than demolition.
RJC’s Mira Saba Earns Prestigious Fenestration Credential
Recommended by LinkedIn
Mira Saba, an Engineer-in-Training at RJC Engineers, has achieved a distinguished credential from the National Fenestration Rating Council, a rare certification held by fewer than 50 professionals across Canada. This achievement showcases Mira’s expertise in thermal modeling of fenestration systems, reflecting her exceptional talent and commitment to driving energy-efficient building innovations.
Prolonging the Life of Your Below-grade Parking Structure
Cracks in the concrete foundation of below-grade parking structures are a common problem that can lead to significant issues if not addressed promptly. Nigel Parker, a Principal at RJC Engineers, highlights two effective repair methods: traditional crack injection and area injection, each offering unique benefits. He also highlights how regular maintenance is vital to preventing leaks and ensuring longevity.
Eco-Friendly Condo Upgrades: A Path to Sustainability
RJC's Jack Albert and Wendy Macdonald delve into the importance of eco-friendly upgrades that are essential for older condo buildings to meet sustainability goals. As we push toward net-zero by 2050, upgrades such as high-performance windows, roofing, and HVAC systems are key. By using energy studies and life cycle assessments (LCAs), owners can make smart, data-driven decisions to boost energy efficiency, cut costs, and enhance comfort.
