RoadMap for Agile Transformation

RoadMap for Agile Transformation

As an Agile Coach/Scrum Master, do you want to do an Agile Transformation but you do not know where to start? In this article, you can find a suggestion where to start and what kind of activities you should take into consideration to run a successful Agile Transformation.

Once your company has made the decision to become agile, the next step is the question of how? How do I start my transformation? What do I have to consider and who do I need to do it? Where to start with?

Agile transformation journey takes a traditional company through a series of steps to adopt new Agile ways of working, which sometimes implies as much as changing the mindset by which the company exists, putting Agile values and principles at its core. The goal for the transformation cannot be to do Agile. Understanding and communicating the business objectives that will be achieved with the transformation is a critical first step.

An Agile Transformation does not need to be hard, if you know where to start and what to do you will increase your chances of success as a leader. With this article, I hope to provide you with an overview of a possible Agile Transformation Roadmap that you can use a first step towards Agile Transformation.

An Agile Transformation Roadmap is all about getting people to change and having that change be sticky. But getting people to change is hard and resistance to change is often the thing that derails Transformation.

When creating the agile transformation roadmap, some important items that could be included and are listed in no particular order:

  • Initial Assessment
  • Include a “why” and/or “vision” statement
  • Involve management for targeted implementation of the agile transformation
  • Identification of the agile (pilot) areas and formation of the transformation team
  • Training of Stakeholders and other members of the organization at all team levels
  • What is the scope of the initiative? Organization level or team level?
  • Defining the framework and working methods
  • Creating the Agile Teams and Champions
  • Training the agile roles
  • Creation of subsequent agile transformation project plans, where appropriate
  • Define Metrics for Success
  • Creation of an Agile PMO
  • On-Going coaching
  • Inspection and Adaptation
  • Reinforcement
  • When and how to introduce agile adoption
  • Will the organization restructure?
  • Kick-off for agile teams
  • Which framework is most appropriate for the organization or team
  • A reasonable date range of the roadmap items
  • Continuous review and adjustment of the team dynamics
  • Retrospectives at various levels (a plan on how to respond to change)
  • Product and project plans

After an agile transformation roadmap has been established, subsequent agile transformation project plans can begin to develop to help define and plan additional details and requirements for each of the roadmap items.

Agility is more than the Scrum or Kanban method, more than the meetings for planning and review, more than the role of the Product Owner and the Scrum Master. Agility is an attitude. It appeals to our own behavior, our way of thinking and our cooperation with others. Such a change does not happen in a meeting or a training, it is a journey that everyone has to take. The best solution for your agile organization can therefore only be found through yourself.

We can say that Agile transformation is achieved when individual team members naturally and consciously follow the values, principles, and Agile practices to complete the task at hand rather than being forced or told to follow a path.

Hopefully, with this article, you got an idea of where to start and what kind of activities you should take into consideration to run a successful Agile Transformation.

Nice article and some good focus points. The thing about these agile transformations that fail is that they go from Vision Statement that a few a at the top wrote and the directly to the team level. They rarely if ever help transform middle management which is so key in making any kind of transformation happen, Even LeSS took it so far and suggested eliminating management from the process completely, which may work in the short run but then people start asking about growth paths. Elon Musk took it to the next level and recently just fired according to the news most of the management staff altogether. It is a shame that middle management has become and always has been the blocker for all transformations for generations. The problem is that the organization created those middle managers and how they work. Thank you for this article because it made me really think.
