ROCK 105: REST and Confidence
This is Plead the 5th... well. another kind. Every once in a while there are 5 Mondays in a month. This month, and in reverse order, I have have posted:
This is that occasional 5th Monday, or the Eve of it anyways, at time of writing. Plead the 5th allows for an opportunity to round up and reflect, and own things. Indeed, I have posted the aforementioned Monday posts and think them worth a read and re-read. There is good stuff within. That in m ind, yesterday evening, I posted this on Facebook.
- The new work studio, in progress... tech and more coming together. :) This Summer... cool projects and events around youth, leadership, entrepreneurship and more... and presenting at a North American mentorship conference on character and engagement. Creating my comic strip this Summer finally... and writing a series of short stories in the sci-fi vein (bucket list things oh yeah). Reaching for 40" waist this Summer too. Tomorrow, the website gets the rework to reflect where my Soul wants to go in service. Reinventing the Barry Unit, not by changing but by following passion. <3 See where this all takes me. ;)
While a lifelong work in progress (as we all are), the website was reworked. And, I am reminded today that this post is also serving as a part of ROCK 105.
In other words, this is the Eve of Day 15 of ROCK 105.... Thus far, we have gone in on Acceptance, Accountability, Appreciation, Assertiveness, Awe, Beauty, Candor , Caring, Certitude, Charity, Cheerfulness, Cleanliness, Commitment... and Compassion ... as strengths of character in these days and going forward. Today, and in Plead the 5th...
CONFIDENCE
How does this all tie together? The strength to face life with self-assurance requires a degree of the virtues noted and posted above. The capacity to be reliable and worthy of Trust certainly does. As I have increasingly noted...
- Imagine the strengths of accepting where you are when you are with taking full account of things past and present and owning it. Imagine the strengths of then appreciating and valuing and growing from there, asserting your best voice in doing so. Imagine the power of Awe and Beauty in experiencing the walking forward. Imagine being true to yourself and others in that walk forward, caring about what matters most and being certain of it. Imagine a simple and clean spirit of giving and cheer in doing so. Imagine walking committed to that. Imagine living and working for what and whom you care most in doing so. Imagine that countenance, that gate, that spirit. These are the virtues we have examined, in action... in conscious practice.
I imagine the above to be a description of Confidence enacted and practiced. I humbly suggest a read or re-read of the posts noted above, and imagine. Imagine that kind of walk.
Confidence Practiced
This is day 107 of my own self-isolation. My bubble is singular though I have friends and tech. I have much in my life. But Confidence serves me in forging my next chapter, not post-Pandemic but next chapter, next book.
Also last night ... I posted...
... I came across this video of the Baha'i Temple of Light in Chile.
It inspired me to consider long held and true bucket list experiences; not as end of life actions but as next book actions.
Confidence is not simply believing in ourselves. It is believing in something bigger.... and in the future.
Ask yourself...
- In the face of the world, of what am I presently and even humbly self-assured?
- How can I strengthen my self-assurance and in what areas of my life?
- How can I build my practice of Trust?
- How can I see my miscues in a new confident light?
- How can I patiently practice the journey of studentry as mastery?
- How can I more fully express who I am?
- How can I best practice Optimism?
For me, there is much I do not know, some of which I do not even care to know. What I do know is my deep belief in humanity, character and unity. What I do know is my track record of Resilience, Endurance, Strength... and Trust.
REST up, I know it's importance. I also do know some of the best advice I have ever been given is still true... I will never get it all done, be patient with yourself and God.
What I do know is my heart is not perfect but it strives to be noble. What I do know is that I have my own gifts. What I do know is who and what matters most in my life. What I do know is that my task is to bring my best to what matters most.
Confidence is not arrogance. It knows we have worth and our task is to bring our worth to where it is most needed. What can you bring and where is it most needed?
Own it. Bring it. And, for Heaven's Sake, do not fall into the Confidence Trap.
Peace, passion and prosperity...

Lead, inspire, educate, and unite. Move forward together, stronger. My work is about bringing campuses, companies and communities together, moving forward stronger. I work with educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders to do just that. My work is about character leadership and education and its role in helping individuals and organizations build a better world at school, work, business and community. I deliver on it through speaking, coaching and development in character leadership and education. My expertise is character leadership and education. I advance unity in diversity by moving the needle on leadership and education that is high character and results forging. I speak, teach, coach, facilitate, lead, write, sing, dance, cartoon and create on that. In 1980, Professor Rolf Hattenauer changed my life. A highly respected expert in Human Resource Management, he expected much of us and he believed much in us. He was an educator and leader of high character. He was extraordinary. To this day and beyond, I try my darnedest to honor his spirit with my own work. That is another story. But I hope I did him service here.
