The Role of Armed Security Officers (ASOs) When Traveling to DCA

With the upcoming presidential inauguration, many dignitaries, celebrities, and other notable individuals will be invited to travel to Washington, D.C. Having worked in executive protection for over 25 years, I understand the critical importance of maintaining stringent security measures, especially at key locations such as Regan National Airport. One vital component of this framework is the Armed Security Officer (ASO) program, which plays a crucial role in ensuring safety when traveling to the nation’s capital.

The ASO program was established in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. That day highlighted the need for enhanced security protocols in aviation. To bolster security, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) developed the ASO program, mandating that all general aviation flights landing at Regan National Airport must have an Armed Security Officer on board. This initiative has been 100% successful in preventing any further incidents, underscoring its effectiveness and necessity.

Eligibility for ASOs is stringent, ensuring that only the most qualified individuals are entrusted with this responsibility. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or nationals, at least 21 years old, and free from any emotional or mental conditions that could impair their duties. They must have completed a basic law enforcement training program and possess at least four years of experience as an active, retired, or former law enforcement officer. Furthermore, they must undergo a two-day training program conducted by the Federal Air Marshal Service and pass all necessary background checks. Although ASOs are not federal employees, they are compensated by the aircraft operator or Fixed Base Operator (FBO).

At Crisis24 Private Strategic Group, we’re uniquely positioned to assist clients in meeting these critical requirements. Our team of experts facilitates the recruitment and training of ASOs, ensuring they meet all necessary criteria and are fully prepared to handle their duties. We’re already equipped with over 20 accredited ASOs across the country. We provide comprehensive support to our clients, from the initial selection process to ongoing training and re-qualification. Our goal is to offer convenience and peace of mind, so that our clients can travel to DC stress-free.

If you’re planning on traveling to the capital region, I invite you to reach out so that we can discuss how to make your journey a successful one.

Good info KG. Many consider this a security enhancement, and rightfully so. But the real value is the time saved and convenience. Those who've opted for IAD or BWI often learn an ASO is the right choice.
