Mayor of Troy, Michigan; Former Staff Assistant, Office of Ronald Reagan

It’s hard to believe it has been 20 since President Reagan passed away. I remember the day so vividly, and the ensuing week when Reagan alumni spanning many decades came together to honor our boss one last time.  I had worked in the Office of Ronald Reagan for a handful of years leading up to the President’s death, and had forged deep bonds with the then intimate and dutiful staff, and of course with the Reagans themselves. My life changed dramatically when Joanne Drake hired me, and I always look back at my time in the ORR with warmth and true joy.

I learned so much working for the President, studying him, and being part of such greatness.  Ronald Reagan had a warmth and charm that allowed him to build relationships not only within his beloved Republican party, but across the aisle too.  And it worked; he was able to govern effectively, both as Governor of California and as President of the United States, because of his relationship building skills and his ability to work with everyone.

Now, as the Mayor of Troy, Michigan, I know how important that is and I work hard to do it every day.  It’s not always easy, but I will never stop doing what it takes to work together and represent everyone.  That is one of the many lessons I learned from President Reagan, and just one of his many lasting legacies.

Thank you, Mr. President! You’ve made me a better person and public servant!

This is wonderful message. This is why the character of our President matters. Making positive impressions and inspiring future generations can not be underestimated!

Not everyone will agree upon the worthiness of decisions and policies from various administrations. However, we would find it surprising for anyone to challenge the dignity and leadership he brought to Washington, the nation, and the world during his terms.

I was a Junior Officer in the Marines in Quantico when Reagan was in Office. It was a great time to serve this great Country!

Great article remembering a great leader and two remarkable people. Remembering the Reagans and the era they represented always bring back memories of an optimistic era of substance and style. Joe Deary
