Ryze Mushroom Coffee Review - Is It Good For You?

Ryze Mushroom Coffee Review - Is It Good For You?

I know what you're thinking...another mushroom coffee review? But I can't help it; the benefits of medicinal mushrooms in coffee are mindblowing, and if you think about it, they can make us more productive at work.

Recently, someone in my family suffered a major health scare, and one of the things the doctors recommended was to cut down on caffeine content. So yeah, our coffee consumption has a long-lasting effect on our health.

And there's one quick fix - mushroom coffee! But obviously, it's much more complicated than that. For example, the types of mushrooms used in a coffee blend determine if you can enjoy health benefits like better energy levels.

And that's exactly where RYZE Mushroom Coffee comes in. Ryze mushroom coffee is rigorously tested for the nasties found in regular coffee, like heavy metals and mycotoxins (yeah, it's a thing.)

What's RYZE Mushroom Coffee All About?

Simply put, RYZE Mushroom Coffee is an instant powdered drink made of mushrooms and regular coffee. It has only half the caffeine content of a typical cup.

RYZE Superfoods is a new brand started in 2020 by Harvard graduates Andrée Werner and Rashad Hossain. After drinking too much regular coffee and feeling exhausted, they began adding medicinal mushrooms to their coffee until they created the RYZE Mushroom Coffee you see today.

RYZE now offers mushroom coffee, coconut creamer, matcha, and chicory. It also provides a text-message mindfulness and gratitude journal for RYZE members who buy its products.

Is RYZE Mushroom Coffee Good For Your Health?

Yes, according to all the evidence I could find, Ryze coffee is actually good for your health, unlike the instant coffee we turn to in our offices. Prepared with a coffee blend and six adaptogenic mushrooms, Ryze is designed to improve your overall health.

However, to understand the health effects of mushroom coffee, we need to look at its ingredients. So, do Ryze mushroom coffee's ingredients support its health claims?

Let's see for ourselves.

Ingredients of Ryze Coffee

RYZE mushroom coffee has a blend of eight key ingredients, as listed on the product’s label:

  1. Cordyceps
  2. Lion’s Mane
  3. Reishi
  4. Shiitake
  5. Turkey Tail
  6. King Trumpet
  7. MCT oil
  8. Coffee

The first six are functional mushrooms, some of which, like shiitake, are commonly found on store shelves, while others are more exotic.

MCT oil stands for 'medium-chain triglycerides', a type of fat made up of medium-chain fatty acids. These fatty acids, with chains of six to twelve carbon atoms, are easier for the body to metabolize compared to longer-chain fatty acids. Because MCT oil lacks a strong flavor, it doesn’t overpower the taste of products it’s added to. In RYZE mushroom coffee, the MCT oil is derived from coconuts.

Dose Per Serving: RYZE mushroom coffee doesn’t specify the exact amount of each functional mushroom per serving. However, a serving (one scoop) weighs six grams, with two grams being an 'organic mushroom blend'.

Generally, dried mushrooms are about 80-90% water, so two grams of dried mushrooms would be roughly equivalent to 20 grams of fresh mushrooms. This means each serving likely contains around 0.33 grams of each of the six functional mushrooms. The remaining four grams consist of MCT oil and coffee.

Nutritional Properties: According to the RYZE mushroom coffee website, each serving provides:

  • Calories: 15 kcal
  • Carbohydrates: 0.58 g
  • Fiber: 0.48 g
  • Fat: 1.42 g
  • Protein: 0.05 g
  • Cholesterol: 0 mg
  • Sodium: 0 mg

Here’s a closer look at each one of the mushroom extracts used in Ryze coffee, along with their positive effects on your health:

Cordyceps

Cordyceps mushrooms contain more than 700 species, and they are widely used in Chinese traditional medicine. They are known for their potential medicinal benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antimalarial, and antifungal properties.

Cordyceps gained fame during the 1993 Olympics when Chinese athletes credited their success to Cordyceps sinensis supplementation.

The specific species used in RYZE's blend isn't specified, but Cordyceps militaris, which is easier to cultivate, is likely used. Cordyceps may help increase and sustain energy, enhance physical performance, and have various health benefits, though more research is needed to confirm some of these claims.

Lion's Mane

Lion’s mane, scientifically known as Hericium erinaceus, is a popular mushroom supplement known for its high levels of antioxidant compounds with antimicrobial activity.

Lion’s mane can be found across North America, Europe, China, and Japan. It’s rich in proteins, carbohydrates, fiber, minerals like calcium and thiamin, and essential amino acids.

Its polysaccharides help manage diseases such as high blood pressure, hypercholesterolemia, liver problems, cancer, obesity, ulcers, and diabetes. While research supports some cognitive and mood benefits, claims of sharper focus and calm need more evidence.

Reishi

The reishi mushroom, or Ganoderma lucidum, has been renowned in East Asian medicine and is often called the "mushroom of immortality."

Reishi is believed to extend lifespan, promote agility, and strengthen memory. It helps control blood glucose levels, prevent cancer, and protect the liver, though clinical trial results vary.

Reishi is rich in protein, major minerals, and vitamins like riboflavin, niacin, and thiamin. While RYZE claims Reishi relieves stress, more research is needed to confirm this benefit.

Shiitake

Shiitake mushrooms, or Lentinula edodes, are known for their antioxidant, anti-tumor, and immunomodulatory properties.

Shiitake mushrooms are rich in amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. They have antithrombotic properties, which help prevent and degrade blood clots. Lentinan extract from shiitake has shown antibacterial, antiviral, and immunomodulatory effects, which became particularly relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic. These properties support RYZE’s claims of immune system benefits.

Turkey Tail

Turkey tail mushrooms, or Coriolus versicolor, are known for their minimal nutritional value but extensive health benefits.

Turkey tail mushrooms have prebiotic effects, helping to build up the gut microbiome. They also show immunomodulatory and anticancer effects. Studies suggest that turkey tail may aid cancer patients by boosting immune cell counts and improving survival rates. However, claims of relieving chronic fatigue need more research.

King Trumpet

King trumpet mushrooms, also known as king oyster mushrooms or Pleurotus eryngii, are commonly found in grocery stores and are known for their medicinal benefits.

King trumpet mushrooms are nutritious, containing protein, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium. They help regulate sleep cycles and moods by boosting melatonin and serotonin levels.

They also have immunomodulating effects, aiding in the fight against cancer, infections, and other diseases. Research supports their anti-inflammatory properties, aligning with RYZE’s claims.

Other Ingredients

Organic Instant Coffee: RYZE Mushroom Coffee contains organic instant coffee grown in Mexico. Each serving has 48mg of caffeine, about half the caffeine content of a standard cup of coffee.

MCT Oil: RYZE Mushroom Coffee includes medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil made from coconut or palm kernels. The body quickly metabolises MCT oil, which provides energy and promotes fullness. It also helps keep the coffee creamy and neutralizes bitterness.

Mushroom Coffee: Are There Health Benefits?

Ryze coffee and other mushroom coffee products contain beneficial mushrooms with adaptogenic properties that help reduce your daily caffeine intake and improve your health.

According to many scientific studies, mushroom coffee contains proteins, minerals, vitamins, and bioactive components such as secondary metabolites and polysaccharides.

Here are some potential health benefits of these mushrooms:

1. Liver Protection: They help protect the liver from damage. 2. Immune Boosting: They enhance the immune system’s ability to fight off illness. 3. Anti-Cancer Effects: They may have potential anti-cancer properties. 4. Anti-Viral Benefits: They help fight against viral infections. 5. Cholesterol Lowering: They can help lower cholesterol levels. 6. Heart Health: Due to their low fat and high fiber content, they can help prevent cardiovascular diseases. 7. Blood Sugar Management: They can help manage blood sugar levels, aiding in diabetes control. 8. Nervous System Protection: They help protect the nervous system.

Ryze also has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that might even help stave off mental health problems like anxiety and depression, though research on this is insufficient.

Reasons to Consider RYZE Mushroom Coffee

Here are some more reasons you should get Ryze because of the benefits of mushroom coffee:

• Pregnancy: If you’re pregnant and your doctor has approved small amounts of caffeine, RYZE Mushroom Coffee might be suitable. • Caffeine Sensitivity: This coffee could be a great option if you’re sensitive to caffeine but still want a daily boost. • Health Reasons: If you aim to reduce caffeine for digestive or other health reasons, RYZE Mushroom Coffee can help.

Although RYZE Mushroom Coffee is generally considered safe for pregnant individuals, there are adverse effects one must look into.

Recent studies suggest that even the recommended limit of 200mg of caffeine per day can affect a developing fetus. Consuming coffee during pregnancy might lead to low birth weight, which is linked to health risks in adulthood, like obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. Additionally, there is limited research on the safety of consuming mushrooms during pregnancy or lactation, so it’s best to be still cautious.

RYZE Mushroom Coffee is also a good choice for those following specific diets, such as vegan, gluten-free, or keto. The blend includes MCT oil, which makes the drink creamy and smooth. This masks much of the mushroom taste and provides the body without compromising its keto—and vegan-friendly nature by avoiding dairy.

My Final Verdict

Overall, RYZE Mushroom Coffee is a great option if you're ready to eliminate the negative effects of regular coffee, like jitters, crashes, and upset stomachs, and embrace the power of medicinal mushrooms.
