Salary Stories: Success and Disappointments – You need to ask

Salary Stories: Success and Disappointments – You need to ask

Today’s story is taken from my book, A Salary Cinderella Story (Or How To Make More Money Without A Fairy Godmother), with my wonderful co-author Jill L. Ferguson. In this book, we follow 3 friends El (Cinderella), Leticia, and Teresa as they deal with work and relationship issues. In the story we include 7 practical steps to make more money at work from our non-fiction book Increase Your Income: 7 Rules For Women Who Want To Make More Money At Work.

Early in the book, El meets PJ who is on her way to speak at a women’s conference about how to make more money at work. She tells El that one of her favorite phrases is, “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”.

El wants to learn more from PJ but is nervous about asking. Instead of asking directly she says, “It would be so terrific if I could find out about that. I’d really like it if I could get that information.”

PJ grins and says, “Yes, it would be nice if people would give you that information. If they would wave a magic wand and it would just appear.”

El takes a deep breath and asks PJ for help.

PJ quickly agrees and says, “you just learned your first lesson. You need to ask for what you want. Hinting that you want some information and hoping, won’t get it for you.”

They set up a time to meet and PJ starts to share what she knows with El.

Learning for El:

·         It can be uncomfortable to ask but you need to clearly ask for what you want in order to get it

·         If you don’t ask, you won’t get

Learning for you:

·         Think about it - what do want but are afraid to ask for?

·         Read more about how to get what you want at work in A Salary Cinderella Story (Or How To Make More Money Without A Fairy Godmother)

·         If you prefer non-fiction books, you can learn the 7 steps for getting a higher salary at your current job or next job in Increase Your Income: 7 Rules For Women Who Want To Make More Money At Work
