Samsung beats Apple in the Supreme Court; Softbank pledges $50 billion to US startups, and more news.

The Supreme Court backed Samsung's challenge of a $400 million award against Apple. The landmark 8-0 decision significantly reduces the value of design patents and "could have ripple effects across the tech industry."At issue was whether Samsung should be liable for lost iPhone sales or just the value of appropriated design elements "if the item consists of many parts."

Japan's Softbank said it would invest $50 billion in US startups. Word came from Donald Trump in a Tweet and then a lobby appearance in Trump Tower, where the president-elect presented Softbank founder and CEO Masayoshi Son to the doorstopping press corps. "We are going to invest $50 billion into the U.S. and commit to create 50,000 new jobs," Son said.

Donald Trump said Boeing was charging too much to build the next Air Force One and the contract should be cancelled. "I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number," he said, arriving at Trump Tower. "We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money." The president-elect has already used the bully pulpit to persuade Carrier to keep some jobs in the US — an intervention Politico reports was "wildly popular."

Trump also announced he had liquidated his stock portfolio last June. The move goes some way to addressing conflict-of-interest concerns, which PEOTUS said he would speak to at a Dec. 15 news conference with his children (and business partners). It is at that event Trump is expected to answer the big question: How he will handle his own business, the Trump Organization, which has holdings around the world and presumably continued ambitions to expand?

Tech rivals Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google's YouTube have joined forces to identify violent terror content across platforms. The idea is to create a shared industry database of 'hashes' — unique digital 'fingerprints' — for violent terrorist imagery or terrorist recruitment videos or images." The companies agreed to a EU request in May to remove hate speech, but the European Commission says this isn't happening fast enough.
