Sand in my Fist

Sand in my Fist

"Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens." - Khalil Gibran

And no words in the English language has stood out as a mirror to the way I see life, the way my mind looks at what has happened, in a more perfect statement. I mean, how else can one better put across, my life's path, as this one sentence by Khalil Gibran? I have been earlier moved by him or rather ever so frequently, through the past decades, and one piece stood out, at one of the most difficult times of my life. I read it, saw life in a new light and was inspired to write Sand in My Fist.

Getting back to the point. What I really want to say is, there isn't much to life except what you value more over others. In the biggest of big scheme of things, please do not ever forget that. Value yourself first and above everything else. What is your success? That is for you to list out and place as a goal. Nobody else's right, but yours. If you have chosen to measure it in a certain manner, let it be your choice. I measure my choices through the value I give to what's important in my journey and life outlook. In brief, professional success and personal success can look very different.

The choice of which you value, what is expected out of you to choose over what choice is actually yours and felt deeply from within. That is a fundamental right of any human life. We all choose our paths. We can give and seek at the same time and that's absolutely fine. Everyone is on their own life clock. Not a word of that is untrue. That short truth should define your choices for you, by you. Am I asking anyone to be a rebel? Hell no! That would be, quite pointless. I am not answerable for other people. Every person is answerable for themselves alone.

Live your life facing the windscreen. The rear view mirror is on a roll of things getting minuscule without stopping. The side-view mirrors should help you watch out for the stumbling blocks and lessons to learn. But keep your eye on the windscreen, follow traffic rules because you cannot decide for others how safe or unsafe they must be on the road, enjoy the drive. Hum a tune. Graze those knees. Dirty those elbows. Dance. Sing. Paint. Laugh. Dream. Do it all with delight and a sense of gratitude.

The sands of time must be held with a cupped palm as preciousness. They must be let to sift through ever so slowly, with each moment savoured. That's your life, getting closer to its end. Be kind and passionate. Be brave and mindful. That is love.

Whatever you do, watch out through the windscreen, "keep your eyes on the road and your hand upon your wheels" and DRIVE!

Here is the poem for those who are finding it hard to read: Sand in My Fist I walked alone, waves kissing my heels, the tip of my toes, ...I wrote my name on the shore saw my survival, written, as the waves brushed it all, in succinct terms told me  to live for the moment alone. ...what goes beyond lies beyond... it's for me to see, perceive this time, this now and nothing beyond ...to make the most out of the sand I have in my fist ...to know time's slipping away through the tiny gaps filled with sands of time Do I collect all that falls in a safe place or do I let destiny hold it for me as I see it fall? ...fading into personal insignificance to blend, to become a part of this wide span of time live forever in tiny grains of sand that escape through the gaps of my life. © Sandhya Suri
