Saving on Heating Costs

Saving on Heating Costs

Renters and homeowners alike often have to take additional measures to insulate their homes. The culprits are things like fireplace chimneys, drafty windows, and improperly hung doors — things that are not easily fixed. That means people often make due with what they have for the current winter.

Fortunately, the market has provided solutions to the problem.

  • Outlets and Switches: Though they seem innocuous, electrical sockets and wall switches are no slouches in the draft department. Installation of an insulating barrier simply involves unscrewing the cover and fixing it to the plate.
  • Chimney Balloons: These fit in your chimney to act as a plug that keeps warm air from escaping and cold air from infiltrating. Designs vary, and they’re easily removable.
  • Weather Stripping: There are a variety of weather stripping options available to you. Some, like foam or simple felt, are inexpensive but not very durable. Others, like rubber weather stripping, are also inexpensive in the grand scheme of things, but they are much more durable.
  • Door Snake: An outside door with a 1/8” of a gap between it and the floor is equivalent to a 2” hole in an outside-facing wall. Experts recommend getting a cute door snake, or using a towel or a blanket.
  • Door Sweep: Like a door snake, this option seeks to plug drafts from under doors. It looks like the tip of a broom affixed to the bottom of the door. Besides keeping air where it is supposed to be, this option is also supposed to be excellent for dampening outside noises and preventing allergens from entering your home.
  • Heavy Curtains: Curtains that are heavy enough to stave off the full force of the cold are widely available. Just be careful of fake reviews!

All of the websites I consulted seemed to imply that we’d all be able to find our weather proofing solution for under $20, but that sounds dubious to me. At the end of the winter, though, you will be able to see how much you saved and compare it to what you spent on supplies.
