Say it with me now ya’ll, “Relocation, relocation, relocation”

Hello, and welcome to another edition of Behind the Exterior with me, Ellis Morris! Today, we’ll be talking all about relocation and hiring skilled construction professionals from other parts of the US.

First off, I just want to say that hiring with relocation in mind can seem like it’s going to be a mission and a half. But it seriously doesn’t have to be. And it’s a great way to access skills that could be in short supply in your state.

I’ve seen it first-hand, helping facilitate many relocations over the past 12 months, allowing businesses to have access to skills that were in short supply in their area. Relocation is a great solution to a problem many construction companies are facing.

Here are a few things I tell my clients when they mention they’re considering onboarding employees from other areas:

  • Support is the number one thing the candidate is going to need from you. If there’s any hesitation on their part, this won’t go as smoothly as you want it to. They need to know exactly how you’re going to help them, what the process involves, and what’s needed from their side.
  • Give them enough time. Organizing and coordinating a move takes time, so make sure they have it. Relocation should never feel like an impulsive move or a rushed decision.
  • Be clear about the costs of relocation. If there are going to be costs involved for the candidate, they need to know each and every item on the list so they can financially prepare themselves.

BONUS TIP! Your business is also likely to incur costs in the process, so best to know beforehand what they’ll be so that you can be prepared as well!

  • Relocation packages should come standard. Great candidates are more likely to pack up and move if they feel they’re being handsomely rewarded.

Think about it, there are clear pros for your business when it comes to hiring across borders - you have a larger talent pool to source from, AND you can access skills that may not be available in your area. It’s a great way to scale your workforce with the right people, not simply the people you have within your geographic location.

Until next time,
